It's more than that. There's this thing called military tradition that I take pride in. I'm a second generation with that rate and people bearing that same rate have lost their lives doing my job.

Im tired of trying to explain it to people who aren't in the Navy. They just don't understand the significance.

I have 18 months left. I'm referring to myself as AE2(AW) I don't give a frick what they tell me to call myself.

No real explanation that I've seen. It seems as if they don't want us to have an identity, or sailors to feel inferior to others because of their rate.

Best reason I've heard so far is so that they can "cross train" us for civilian application after the military. What a fricking joke.

Think it's not a big deal? the man who came up with this has a degree from Johns Hopkins and Harvard, and he's been using millions of tax dollars for the last three months to come up with it.

For some reason the ones who were appointed to run the entire navy put a lot of thought into this. Makes one wonder why tbh.

Why was it a big deal to begin with?

If you barely got into the Navy with your 35 ASVAB and only qualified for fricking CS, you should be happy to be in the Navy , not be embarrassed because your rate isn't as glorious as others. fricking kids in this new generation.

But why would a title limit or promote more cross training? The titles don't train for you, or learn for you.

Because they can take us out of our usual line of work and stick us wherever they deem nessassary in our NEC fields.

For instance, im an electrician on the F18. With our old job titles, I can only do AE work in F18's.

Now I am just an F18 qualified Second Class PO. That means I just pick orders as a Second Class PO to any F18 command.

When I show up, i go to whatever shop needs an Petty Officer 2nd class. Not the Electrical Shop for that detail. That can be anything from the Ordinance Shop, Corrosion Control Shop or even Logs and Records, even though they sent be through a year and a half of electrical schools for the F18.

One of the actual benefits would be that they won't be pigeonholed by a super specific title when being considered for employment in civilian life.

Very true. but on the flip side of that, from an aviation command line of sight, we will now have individuals working on jets that have little to zero experience in that field. It's going to make working on those jets take exponentially more time and that will lead to longer downtime for those jets.

Just because Sailor A is an E5, does not mean he has any experience in what job he could be filling in a certain command. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Exactly, the money they spent to come up with this plan is unimaginable. Now think how much money it will cost to replace uniform patches, name tags, workplace signs, etc.

The Navy Reddit is having a fricking field day with this. It's comedic gold.

But isn't vagueness also not a good thing on a resume? So instead of being really specific, they're being vague? It doesn't make any sense. If you're half a brain you can put the other shite you did outside of your title on a resume. The titles don't indicate the work. Why after 241 years are these titles now detrimental to finding a civilian job?

Now they'll say they can do everything? Have you ever tried telling that to a potential employer?

Great. Levels the playing field for advancement a little more while weening out the slackers.
