SVP great as always. That story about Fowler flying to Bay Hill to tell Palmer in person that he had to WD from his tournament was awesome

Kelly Tilghman's tribute on the golf channel was just heart-wrenching.
Wow. Fred Couples is just bawling right now. Hard to watch.

The actual GOAT
2016 has seen the deaths of (arguably) the GOAT boxer (Ali), hockey player (Gordie Howe), and now golfer.

This is easily the worst news to come out of yesterday. Arnie was a great man.

From a comments section on Yahoo - a great story about Arnold Palmer:
quote:
When I was sixteen I went to the 1966 Western Open at Medinah C.C. I don't remember the hole but it was a par three near the clubhouse. We positioned ourselves behind the green and Palmer who was playing with Billy Casper and I think Dave Marr pulled his tee shot to the left. He was pin high in the first cut. He had his back to us and as he prepared to chip I thought it would make a great picture. As he started his back swing I took a picture with my old Nikon. The shutter sounded like howitzer going off. Palmer caught it heavy and it came up 5 or 6 feet short. He looked back over his shoulder and stared at me. After putting out he walked right up to me and said, I would appreciate it if you would wait until after we make the shots before taking pictures. He then smiled and took my Program and autographed it.

Some more great stories:
quote:
I played at UCLA and had just shot a great 68 at Oakmont in a college tourney the day before but followed up with an 81 and finished well back of the leaders. I was crushed. I had a chance to win at the start of the day. I was sitting in the locker room close to tears and staring at the floor changing my shoes. I heard a voice say "are you the one who shot 68 yesterday on THIS course". Oakmont was a tough tough golf course. I looked up and it was Arnold Palmer. I think my mouth was hanging open and said "yes thank you sir." He happened to be watching me the day before and I didnt even know it. He walked over to me and said "we all have bad days on the course. It is all about how you handle setbacks with class and character. You have nothing to hang your head about son." He gave me a pat on the shoulder and walked away and suddenly I felt better. He had no reason to do that. I was a nobody but he looked me in the eye when he talked and I could tell he meant what he was saying. I also saw him sign autographs for two hours after a long round at Pebble at the Bing Crosby tournament (Now the AT&T for you youngsters). Two hours AFTER walking Pebble and he was in his late 50's. He was so nice to everyone. Lastly at another AT&T I was near the driving range after the rounds were over and up drives a red Cadillac with you know who driving it. Back for more practice even well past his prime. I took my admission ticket off of my belt, walked up to him and asked him to sign it. I had to mention the day he was so kind to me ten years prior and to my shock he said "I remember that, you played at UCLA didnt you? I almost fell over. He actually remembered me and that time.

Lee Trevino once said, 'Ninety-five percent of the people would rather watch Arnold Palmer unpack the trunk of his car than watch anyone else go out and play.'
In the Golfweek article, Trevino says:
quote:RIP.
“I used to hear cheers go up from the crowd around Palmer,” Lee Trevino said. “And I never knew whether he’d made a birdie or just hitched up his pants.”

Sharing some other people's Palmer stories:
quote:
Arnie will be deeply missed not as one of the great golfers but as a great human being, philanthropist, and one of the most kindest persons you would ever meet. He was kind enough to take about 10 minutes out of his practice session during the Legends of Golf tournament in Austin one year to talk to my wife, son and myself. During the round he birdied the sixth hole and immediately gave the ball to my adoring son. The following year my wife was sick and couldn't make the tournament but my son and I were there, Arnie saw us on the driving range and asked where was my wife? After explaining that she was ill, he wished her the best and signed our program with a special greeting for her. That was Arnie, a really good person and a generous human being.

It is hard to beat a good Arnold Palmer with some whiskey in it.

I know it gets said alot about how celebrities are "down to earth" and so "humble' but after reading and watching Arnold Palmer over my short life the man genuinely seemed like one of the nicest people you would ever meet. There are thousands on thousands of stories of Arnie taking time out of his busy day to treat fans like they were his friends and he seemed to actually care and remember people.
to not only a titan in the world of golf but to a genuinely great human being
RIP Arnie
