I'm reading Hillbilly Elegy at the moment. Sheds some light into rural, poor, white America. Generally speaking, the author (its an autobiography) talks about how even the somewhat intelligent poor people lack long-term vision about opportunity. Kids are the only "long-term plan" for these people, but even then there isn't any planning.

For many people, they dont think long term. Only short term. They have no goals in life. They are convinced that their current circumstances is all their is to life...Having sex sounds like a great idea, they dont want to use a condom because its less fun(which i agree with) then act surprised when the baby comes.
For many poor people, a baby is their only sense of joy in this world. They havd no joy or happiness, but that childs smile. But raising the baby is pure hell for someone who has trouble getting a job paying barely above minimum wage... Also many girls are stupid, they are convinced that the guy they slept with will stay and be a good father. But the guy was only in it for the sex, so youre left with an endless cycle of hookups. Girls looking for love, guys looking for sex. Only the latter happens most times.

While im sure it does happen. Id rager that very rarely do people have kids just to get more government handouts. Rather majority of times they have kids because they dont actually think about the consequence of having sex... When youre poor, you dont think about 9 months from now... Youre only thinking about now. The farthest theyll look in the future is to the first of the month.
