Using the Aeros as an example isn't good. I don't think major league markets enjoy being relegated to minor league status.
My guess is that Los Angeles wouldn't have supported one of those UFL teams. That doesn't mean they aren't a fit for the NFL.

They used the Aeros as a positive for Houston. Apparently, they had really good attendance. The reason they moved was the lease agreement with the Toyota center

Jesus there is s bunch of ignorance in this thread.
The only person that can bring a team in is Les Alexander. And he has said recently it ain't happening. Too many expansion cities in line (KC, Seattle, QC, etc.) and now that Phoenix, Edmonton are getting new arenas, I don't see anyone relocating anytime soon.
Also there was a frick ton of support for the aeros. I went to plenty of games the last two seasons that sold out. Les just priced the team out of the city

The aeros league was a minor league team. I don't know if they were nhl affiliated. I don't know if hockey works like that.
And for baseball, you can't have a triple a team next to the big club. Nobody does that, right?
I don't know about most teams, but Detroit's main affiliate is in Grand Rapids, MI.

What helps Houston ticket sales vs say, Quebec City, is the number of local Houstonians that would show to root for their road team.

It would have been great for the Dallas Stars, who have no real rivals (Chicago is the closest they have to a rival, and that only because way back in the 70's the Dallas Black Hawks were their CHL franchise) and a weak fan base (games sell out but over half the crowd supports the opponents).

I don't think there's any space-related nicknames left for Houston to get another professional Franchise.
But seriously, if there was enough support for an NHL team here, I've gotta think those folks could afford to build their own arena and not have to use the Toyota Center. It may not be economical, but now you can move concerts/wrestling/trade shows/conventions/etc. and split them between the two arenas. So it's not like they couldn't do it if they really wanted to.
Eventually the NHL is going to go to 32 teams. I'd think for Houston to realistically have a shot, they'd have to have an arena and the necessary suitors already in place...which they don't have.

Does Houston need another 18,000 seat arena? Seems like many NBA/NHL teams share arenas. If they ever tear down the Astrodome certainly a new arena could be built there.

Harris County-Houston Sports Authority is not going to build another arena. Especially not with the idea that it will split revenues with the Toyota Center.
The only way Houston will get an NHL team is if Alexander buys one.

As previously mentioned, it almost happened around 1997-98, incidentally enough, with the Edmonton Oilers. It would've been a nice little band aid just after the football Oilers left, but nobody seemed to care either way about the NHL once the NFL said it was returning in 1999.
I've been a pretty big fan of each of what are now the three major sports' Houston teams. I attribute my general lack of interest in hockey to a lack of a home town team to root for. Being from Houston, no way I'm rooting for a Dallas team. I don't doubt that if the Dallas, Miami, Phoenix and Tampa teams have remained in those cities for two decades and counting, so can a Houston NHL team.
That being said, given the scale and distribution of interest in hockey in North America, I don't think Sun Belt cities, save for Los Angeles, should be in the major league hockey business. It's too much of a fringe sport down here. MLS has made much more sense.
But, pragmatism aside, I'd love to see an NHL team playing in Toyota Center on a regular basis.

BTW, the Aeros had TONS of support down here during most of their history. It was a big reason why the Edmonton Oilers were almost a done deal.
It's a shame they weren't absorbed into the NHL from the WHA back in the day.

If Houston does get a team, it would have to be a relocation rather than expansion (at least I hope).
