What band in your opinion summarizes or best defines what rock music should sound like?

It's ACDC. Other bands maybe more influential or have more fans or whatever. But the Bon Scott lineup is what rock and roll should sound like.

The Stones, The Greatest Rock-N-Roll Band In The World.

The Beatles never performed live save for very early and that was to crowds of screaming, crying young girls for whom it more Beatlemania than anything related to music. Hell, you couldn't even hear the music.

Rock-N-Roll lives being played in front of people, not in multiple tracks in a studio.

Tom Morello appeared on That Metal Show one time to debate the top 5 Tony Iommi riffs. He stated that the top 3 songs for beginners to learn on guitar are

Smoke on the Water
Satisfaction
Iron Man

Between those three riffs, you get a dose of intense, dirty, and feel of the early era of rock music. All three have a little blues in them too. Smoke on the Water not as much as the other two though.

(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction by the Stones is the ultimate rock 'n roll song, and set the Rolling Stones apart from all the pop bands flourishing at the time, including the Beatles.

This band doesn't get mentioned much, but, The Kinks. You Really Got Me is arguably the first metal song and early Kinks were renowned and notorious for their raucous concert performances in the states(got them barred from performing there the latter half of the decade).

Basically if someone had never listened to rock music and you could only pick one band to let them see who ya got?

Beatles. If I gotta pick one.

They basically were pop rock, but became so much more as they evolved.

I want to say Zepplin, but that is my personal preference creeping into the discussion.

Zepplin were The Beatles 2.0.

They took what the Beatles were doing and made it better. Again, my opinion.

I did not say Stones, but I am not about to try to craft an intelligent argument against them. It's not possible.

It's definitely the Stones. I think a lot of people (like me) who wouldn't put them in their top 3 or 5 rock bands would still pick them for this category.

This

Through work I became "friends" with Chuck Leavell many years ago. I was never a big Stones fan but my brother was HUGE fan and when Chuck asked if we would like to check out a show, I knew better than to say no. I went not expecting much, I mean come on, a bunch of 70 year old guys who I never thought were really very good players to begin with, but I went with an open mind. I. WAS. BLOWN. AWAY.

Mick was unreal, he never stopped moving the entire show. Keith was great, Charlie was great, I stood the entire night.

Still don't listen to much Stones but definitely have to admit that they are THE iconic rock band.

AC/DC - Biggggg over the top guitars, sexual lyrics in every song, awesome riffs, full throttle party atmosphere, they even have the rebellious appearance with the school boy outfit. They embody rock N roll.

Faith in this board restored.

Not the commercial or overplayed stuff. Seek out the little known nuggets of the library and enjoy. Will take you back in time to rock roots.

They were magic together live. They hadn't performed live for a few years, and without any real preparation they did this. LINK It's not like John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr coincidently became great live performers only after the Beatles broke up.
