They were magic together live. They hadn't performed live for a few years, and without any real preparation they did this.
Gimme a break. The rooftop performance was unannounced and lasted all of 45 minute.
If the question was "who is the greatest studio pop band of all time?". The Beatles take it hands down.
The iconic Rock~N~Roll BAND is the Stones. Rock and roll is made to be played live. That is the essence of it, the heart of it. You cannot be the iconic RNR band when you don't play live. The amount of live performances by the Beatles pales compared to the Stones. Not even in the ball park.

I'm willing to make the argument that the Stones studio/live-wise with Mick Taylor were better than the Beatles in totality because of what Taylor brought to the table in conjunction with Richards. It was rock and roll magic.
Stones from 1969-73 may have been the greatest rock band anyone has ever seen/heard(with exception to The Who live 1969-70, of course).

These bands are the best of the best of any kind of music, with Bon Jovi being an exception to that. They are iconic, legendary, historic, etc. but I just dont consider any of these 3 true "rock" icons.
This reminds me of some of the inductees into the rock and roll hall of fame. Some have no business being classified as rock. They are way more pop music with a guitar in the band to me.
It just all depends on what you classify as what rock music is or was.

Taylor was amazing and hugely underrated.
