What band in your opinion summarizes or best defines what rock music should sound like?
Basically if someone had never listened to rock music and you could only pick one band to let them see who ya got?

The Rolling Stones, they damn near influenced EVERYBODY.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Rolling Stones.

That's tough. The short list would have to be:
Sabbath
Zeppelin
The Who
The Stones
The Beatles
I would lean Zeppelin here, but I can find reasons for those 5 (and probably 5 more, but they would have weaker cases).

Probably the Stones. I actually like the Beatles more, but the Stones are more rock n roll.
London Calling-era Clash would probably be my runner-up.

I know I will get killed for this but my answer is
AC / DC.
They are not diverse, they aren't really critically acclaimed, and they are a one trick pony you could say.
But damnit they flat out kick arse and to me represent what rock music is at its core. They are built on guitar riffs and solos and haven't changed that formula.
Although I will take the Rolling Stones as the more important and better band all day. Way more diverse, way better front man, etc.
The Beatles are to too much pop rock for me. Great songwriting, singing, harmonics yeah. But do they rock, not so much.
Sabbath is more just straight up heavy metal, they basically invented the genre.

Sex, drugs, rock-n-roll I think Stones.

The Beatles, beginning with their 1966 masterpiece recording, "Revolver".
Their first few albums are heavily influenced by American pop music of the early '60s and are hard to categorize as "rock", and the transitional album "Rubber Soul" is influenced by folk music.

I would say Led Zeppelin or The Who
For something a little more recent, maybe Audioslave or The Raconteurs

It's definitely the Stones. I think a lot of people (like me) who wouldn't put them in their top 3 or 5 rock bands would still pick them for this category.

Led Zeppelin and it's not even close.

To me, Zeppelin is far more of a purist rock fan's band, especially at present. The Rolling Stones, however, have fans ranging from teenage girls to middle aged housewives to intense classic rock aficionados. Zeppelin does too, but in a far more limited fashion.
Part of that, of course, is that The Stones still play. But I think they just have a broader appeal and are basically synonymous with the rock and roll persona.

I'd even narrow it down to the Stones from 1968-1972. Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main Street is the closest to perfection any rock band has ever come. There are bands I like more, but if I'm talking the Platonic ideal of a Rock n Roll Band: it's that era of the Stones.

Stones over the Beatles... just because of their swagger..

Plus they were leaps and bounds a better live act.

AC/DC-straight forward, in your face rock
Zepplin-Obvious
Queen-Obvious, added theatrical sound and style
Stones-Obvious
Deep Purple, Sabbath- foundation of metal
Motorhead-Added a punk element to metal
Skynyrd-Southern rock
I like all of them, but for different reasons.
