Been thinking about getting an African Grey or some type of parrot... I've heard they are disgusting though. What are some drawbacks of having a bird? I know they live forever, so I guess one of these days my kid will take him/her.
Would you get one as a baby, or as young as you can or get an adult?

My MIL has a couple, they are loud as frick. Not all of them like people and some of them like only certain people and hate others. If they don't like people, they can bite hard and be real assholes. My son wants one, I tell him frick no.

My parents have had a yellow nape Amazon for probably 30 years. He's cool, but he only likes my dad. He isn't excessively loud, but he gets after it in the mornings. He used to talk much more than he does now. He immigrated to my grandma's because her dog died and she needed the company.
Pros: birds are cool, they talk, very friendly if you become their person.
Cons: mean as shite if they don't like you, annoying at times, and they absolutely refuse to die.

My dad had some kind of green parrot. It was big and mean as shite. It would honeydick you into trying to pick it up and then bite you as hard as it could. He accidentally killed it after cleaning a pistol in his home office where he kept this big stupid fake tree for the bird to shite all over. I guess the fumes got it. I hear they are sensitive to solvents and self cleaning ovens.
I felt bad for the bird, seems like a shitty way to go but I don't miss that a-hole one bit.

My nanny has a green one. 21 years old. Still remembers my name when I go over there. Yells my name like my mom used to when I was being a little shite.

I had one growing up. One of the best pets i've ever had. It's a typical pet...eats, sleeps and shits. Only real difference it shits where it lives.
It whistled songs, repeated what it was taught and what it heard enough...like cuss words, etc. Sat in the palm of my hand and let me pet its stomach, etc.
DO NOT feed them sunflower seeds in their seed mix. Sunflower seeds are like crack to them and they'll throw all the other food all over the place digging for sunflower seeds

My fatass neighbor has a bird he calls "pretty bird". Not sure what's more annoying, the bird chirping or him talking to it.
Eta: There was a gang of parrots that lived on this cell phone tower by my house. Always squawking, shitting, and chewing shite up. I shot one with a BB gun, and I swear he tried to kill me. Switched to a pellet gun, and with the help of this hawk that also lives by me, they moved on.

Pros: An opportunity to put your carpentry skills to the test building a grand outdoor bird enclosure.
Cons: Looks like most have been listed already.

We had two growing up.
One didn't do anything. It was pretty nice, liked to just hang out w/ you. Boring to me.
The other was smarter, talked some, and was a total a-hole who almost bit my ear off. I slung him into the wall with quite a bit of force. He died...

We've got an a-hole cockatiel. He just wants to sit in his cage, even if you leave the door open.
I feed and water him, so I'm the only person he will let touch him unless you've got balls of brass. If you don't pull back when he hisses, chirps or snaps at you, he'll let you pet him a little. It helps to be about half drunk to calm your nerves if it's your first "Peanut experience".

Greys are fascinating but most only like one person and will freak out if anyone else gets near them. Big draw back if you have an idea of this being a family pet.

I use to but he flew away.

I have one on my shoulder as I type. 34 and counting.
As people have said, they are not for everyone and I would probably rethink my decision knowing what I do now.

Toured the marine mammal research institute in gulfport this summer and they started the tour with showing a parrot and demonstrating how they're amazing animals that make horrible pets.
They live about 80 years so will likely outlive you.
They have the mind of a 3-4 year old child (can you imagine a toddler for 80 years and never outgrowing the toddler stage)
They can snap a broomstick with their beak as easy as you can snap a toothpick.

I have a Chestnut Fronted Macaw aka a Severe Macaw. He's 8 years old. He says about 30 words and a few sentences. He is a one person bird like what has been mentioned here. He can and will do serious damge to hands and fingers with that powerful beak. He's fully flighted at the moment but i'll clip him soon so I can take him outside. He grows new feathers three times a year so clipping is an ongoing thing.

I'd suggest you do a ton of research and, if you can, go hang out with some parrot keepers before making that leap. I'm an animal person but I have zero desire to babysit a neurotic parrot for the rest of my life.
I've looked into pied crows before. I'd be more apt to consider a crow, but I don't know enough about them to know if they're as bad a parrots.
