I'm watching The Office for the first time. I'm about half way through season 8, but I know what happens and how the Jim and Pam storyline ends.

Reading around, there seems to be a lot of hate for these two characters. I don't get it. I like their story.

That's a horrible season.
Ellie Kemper's burgeoning hotness was the only thing that got me through it.

I think more people hate Pam than Jim.

It's annoying, but fairly realistic. That reality can rub people the wrong way.

Yeah, it hasn't been very good. But, I haven't hated it. It is probably easier to binge watch a bad season knowing that it improves somewhat the next season than to have to deal with it in real time one episode a week.

Are you referring to the other characters in the show hating them or the audience?

Their story got rough but it was a realistic portrayal of a married couple, with children, trying to make a relationship work long distance.

I liked most of that series even after Michael left. I got slightly annoyed at what they turned Andy to, but how he ended up was somewhat fitting. The only addition I actually loathed was the british chippy. Especially what they ended up doing with her at the end. Both my wife and I were appalled, and I don't get that way with shows.

My impression is people hate the Jim and Pam story arc more than they actually hate the characters. Though I have seen some pretty hateful takedowns of Pam. She's selfish, conniving, etc.

I thought the shoe lost its magic when Jim and Pam got married. Not sure if that's too blame, or they lost some writers or something. It was wildly inconsistent after that. The first 4 seasons were brilliant. Season 4 is where it started turning though. I bailed around season 6.

Definitely the worst season but I love the office enough to still find enjoyment in the Michaelless seasons. And yes the Jim and Pam hate is a popular opinion. I got a little annoyed with some of the cliche writing about them going through a tough time but I understand that they were in need of another captivating love interest storyline.

Yeah, I don't really get that.

I can see that (Jim/Pam pre-marriage was an excellent love story), but like a previous poster said, it is a fairly realistic portrayal of a marriage. I like that, but maybe some people don't want realism like that in a sitcom.

We already had Friends that toyed with your emotions about Ross and Rachel for 10 seasons. They couldn't necessarily do that with Jim and Pam, especially since they worked together. The dynamic was a little different, but post marriage Jim and Pam was just fine.

Jim chasing Pam was a much better relationship than when they actually got together and got married.

incorrrect

I can see you making an argument for pre/post married J&P, but not that awkward phase where they would have fun and awkwardly and silently acknowledge nothing was going to happen.

Plus Roy had to go.

I think the whole show was pretty realistic, albeit hyperbolic. Anyone who has worked in an office setting has worked with someone like most of the characters. The show just made the characters a little more extreme than real life. The socially unaware boss, the drab guy there just to punch the clock(Stanley), the cold hyper-sensitive bitch(Angela), the brown noser(Andy), the overachieving dork(Dwight), etc.

Jim and Pam were just the normal ones the viewer was supposed to relate more to.

I didn't either. Pretty sure it was someone here a while back that posted it. I didn't see the season he was mainly talking about though when Jim was home and she went off to art school.

Pam didn't really do anything to elicit negative reactions during the art school season. I guess every show that is popular just tends to spout off these types of opinions, though.

I will say, I watched Parks and Rec before The Office and before starting The Office, I swore I would not like The Office as much as Parks and Rec. However, I have liked The Office way way more than Parks and Rec.

In the beginning Pam seemed to kind of toy with Jim, even though she was in a serious relationship. But Jim knew she was in a serious relationship, so he kind of set himself up on that one. But over the course of the show, it always seemed that Jim cared more, and was willing to sacrifice more than pam was in the relationship.

Since I don't think the OP has got to this point yet, I'll put a semi-spoiler tag here:

The Pam hate peaked when Jim wanted to follow his dream job and Pam was a bitch about it, even after Jim supported her when she followed her art school dream. At least that is when I started saying that she was being a selfish bitch.

I haven't watched season 9 yet, but it is my understanding that she fixes it and does the right thing in the end.

I mean, do people hate Coach Eric Taylor when he pretty much did the same thing when Tami Taylor had that job offer in Philadelphia?

Jim and Pam after marriage is real life...or at least the best portrayal of marriage of an otherwise strong couple that a comedy could pull off without losing the funny.

My lady and I watch The Office at night as we fall asleep and we saw the episode last night where Pam has the baby. Michael calls a meeting while Pam is having contractions in the office and Michael has a list of 10 things that would help speed up the labor process. So his bright idea was to do the exact opposite and the first thing on the list was stimulate the nipples.

So Michael says "Alright, everybody don't think about Pam's nipples...think of Pam's nipples as Toby's grundle".

I laughed so hard I farted.

That's a pretty unfair criticism of the character. Jim and Pam weren't married when Pam went to art school, and they certainly didn't have two small children.

Jim was very selfish in every decision regarding Athlead. He joined in the company after he and Pam had already discussed it and he agreed not to. He invested all of their savings when it was certainly unclear if he needed to. And he was living the bachelor life in Philly while Pam was at home working a full time job and raising two children.

But yeah, Pam was the selfish bitch in that scenario.
