Also: Office underdog/underrated character: Gabe

YES. I felt like I was the only one who liked him out of all my friends and family who watched. I was convinced he was going to wind up being the serial killer.

The guy who played him is on Silicon Valley now and he is even funnier there.

What season was the writer's strike? I am doing a rewatch right now and about half way through Season 4

It was Season 4. That probably wasn't as big of a deal as I remember it being. Though the season was about half as long as it was supposed to be.

I think the "caricatures of themselves" comment hit the nail on the head. The humor stated to become more silly than uncomfortable, which is what started making the show resemble most typical sitcoms, sans laugh track.

Plus, I just can't buy into the "group participation" activities outside of the office...yeah, like everyone's gonna take time out of their weekend for a co-worker's out-of-town wedding or Duwali ceremony, GTFO...

Instead of the silly plotlines they settled on in the later seasons, I would've liked a storyline where someone leaked some of the "documentary" footage (since that IS what it's supposed to be, after all), and the viewers would get to see the dynamic after the characters find out what everyone said & did behind each others' backs....it could've put things back on the "uncomfortable" track IMO. Now, I did miss a section of the series, so if they DID do something like that, then apologies, lol...

As for Jim and Pam...entertaining characters as a viewer, but I'd approach both of 'em with caution in real life.

For instance, Nellie isn't nearly as bad watching it all at once than she was at the time.

Andy annoyed more than Nellie towards the end of the series on my binge watch.

The show floundered a bit with the writers' strike and finding its identity post-Michael, but I felt the payoff was worth sticking with it.

I feel the writer's strike season was the best one of the whole series and that we really missed out on some good stuff because of that stupid strike.

The dinner party episode at Michael's condo is one of my all-time favorites.

Yeah, the character never really made sense. They did better with him towards the end, and obviously his movie schedule had a lot to do with how they used (or didn't use) him. But it was like they tried to recreate Michael's ineptness.

Also, he and Erin breaking up before she dated Gabe was never really explained. They end one season together, and then start the next separated, but with no rationale.

I don't "hate" Jim and Pam, I just would have preferred they got about half as much screen time. Sometime around season four I got very tired of them and their narcissism.

The christening got me. They invited every person they work with to the christening and they all showed up? Yeah right

My married friends suck for the most part. I understand why they suck and I don't hold it against them. It just stinks to find out real time that you are just not that important anymore, doubly so if they have kids.

They were fine until they had their first baby.

After that, Pam was a huge bitch.

Jim never bothered me.

I'm sure there are some pretty tight-knit offices out there. Especially if they are low turnover.

It's probably more that they don't want to subject you to being around other people's kids. I mean I have kids, and I pretty much hate being around other people's kids. It'd be even more miserable were I single.

One of my favorite episodes. That one and Take Your Daughter To Work in season 2 really showcased the awkwardness that was Michael Scott. Which is what made the show great those first few seasons.

I don't get the Pam hate either. I thought she was the most real character on the show. We've all known a Pam where we've worked. Some of us have known someone a little like a Dwight, or Michael, or Creed, or Angela, but not many have worked with someone exactly like them

I guess my biggest problem was the Pam when she was with Roy. She used Jim for that emotional support that Roy was clearly unable to provide, and she would've been happy with that arrangement indefinitely had Jim not forced her hand.

I read through the responses, so my take isn't original, just mine...

The Office: is hating Jim and Pam a popular opinion?
In general, yes. But a lot of women viewers love the Jim character and a lot of men viewers want to nail Pam. Obvious reasons of course.

I have issues with both - even if this is how some people get their women - Jim constantly hitting on an engaged woman is dick move. Then Pam allowing and enjoying it all along while still engaged is selfish to both Roy and Jim.

But throughout the story arc, Jim is a beta nice guy. Pam never really removes herself from the selfish victim role.

Jim actually had someone that challenged him in Karen, something Pam never did. Every time Jim got close to moving on from Pam, she inserts her selfishness. And Jim was too doe eyed with Pam to say no.

Jim wants Pam way more than Pam wants Jim IMO. And that's my issue with them. I never saw what Pam actually brings to the table for Jim. Jim had enough talent to hit Amy Adams character and Rashida Jones, etc, he wasn't hurting to find a better partner than Pam.

Without Jim, Pam would be 3x divorced riding the pole at 35.

Honestly I hate both of these assholes.

Jim is about the worst friend in the world. He's a selfish prick and isn't very funny except to anyone but Pam. That alone makes her an a-hole.
