If you are an engineer and not making over 50k out of school you are probably the worlds worse engineer and they needed a body with credentials to appease the hiring manager.

Having degrees helped get me my current job. But they weren't enough. And in the end, it was the lucknof the draw that my interviewers happened to want someone's who didn't fit the mold of the business's typical recruits.
Another thing to point out is experiencne means everything. After your first job, your college career means basically nothing.

I have a journalism degree from Baylor where tuition was $42K a year roughly while I was in school.
My family isn't rich or anything but certainly aren't poor. I was good in high school and made a 27 on my ACT. Baylor gave me a pretty large scholarship and just about every single person I knew in college also was on some kind of scholarship.
I graduated with $23K in student loans. Compared to many, that isn't bad at all. Much less than what I make a year covering sports.
Private schools may cost more, but they are also much more willing to give scholarship money to students compared to public schools. I wanted to go to LSU originally, but the out of state made LSU a much more expensive option compared to Baylor.

And yet most seniors in college cannot properly formulate sentences, use spell check, or write papers in the correct format. I have always needed to proofread and correct the papers of every group I've ever been in. Evidently the required English classes aren't teaching people anything
I blame it all on texting. I constantly have to remind my nieces and nephews of this.
The "laziness" of texting carries over into their schoolwork or business writing.

Granted, they may not start at 80K, but if you live in any southern rural area, you may as well be ready to wait days before they show up. I have a friend who is a plumber who can't handle all the work he has. Carpenters as well, another friend says he tells folks who call it will be a minimum of 30 days before he can begin work.

Plumbers do make that much but not until several years after they start. It is hard work at times and can be very dirty. The point is that there is a shortage of people willing to do trades because they are misled from an early age. Some people will serve themselves better in regards to long term financial stability by becoming skilled in a trade in lieu of earning a 4 year degree.

I had him for electronics II, that class, and a bunch of graduate device physics classes. I had him teach me in a survey class where I was only student and he just made my projects up as I presented the previous. Witty dude.
I admit, I do have some regret not sticking with EE (professionally)...it was always intriguing.
Hopefully I can pull off an alternate path PE in ME (never actually took an ME class) here in the next few years. My firm needs to secure a good contract in my home state to do that, but I don't have much control over the that.

Even if you don't start at that high of a salary, one great aspect of most of the trades is being able to start your own business and hopefully by the time you are in your 40s someone else is doing the shitty work.
