I am trying to work on my network performance and one of the things im wondering is different results from different speed test platforms. I have Cox 150down package and one of there Ubee DD366 modem/router. If I run a speed test with my laptop using speedtest.net I never max 80. If I use the speed test on Coxs website I get 125-140. If I use speed test on my apple TV that is hard wired in I get in the 80s like the laptop. I am trying to improve my network...I only get 50 on my iphone 6 standing right next to the modem. I know there are a lot of different variables but this is one spot im looking.

try unplugging everything else and plug your computer directly into the modem. That will make sure nothing else could be online during your test.
One way to make sure you are testing the full signal from Cox and not a watered down signal that is being used during the test.

I was plugged into the modem but there were things on the network too so I will try that. Thing is I was on coxs test and it showed close to what I should get. I am just wondering if Coxs website is rigged to show there connection performing correctly or if speedtest.nets stuff isnt that good of a test.

I don't think the AppleTV has gigabit ethernet, so you won't get more than about 80mbps hardwired from it. It might actually be faster over wireless if it has 802.11ac wifi.

Why are you trying to optimize? Are you having trouble with something? All of your results look very good to me.

Cox's website probably isn't "rigged", it's just that there are fewer "hops" in the test. In other words, your test packets likely aren't leaving Cox's network, so the results will always be equal or faster. Speedtest.net will give you more "real-world" results since the packets are leaving Cox and bouncing around more of the internet.

They both use the same thing (Ookla IIRC) that throws out low numbers.

I use Cox only when they are trying to log the numbers. Otherwise, I use testmy.net

To test it, take everything off of the modem/router except one hardwired computer

Ahh ok didnt realize that about the ATV...its the ATV4 and has always been hard wired in.

My problem is I pay for 150down...on my phone, macs or any device that is on the wifi network I never get anything close to 150 at any point in time regardless if I am standing next to it or not. Id say max ever has been in the 80s. The only time I see over 100 is hard wired with a laptop on coxs website. So what this does is as I move away from the router it naturally gets weaker. To the point that if I am in my back yard next to my pond (right off the back porch) I get about 2-5mb down. So I am trying to tweak it becasue to me it seems im not getting what im paying for.

I have the one router on one side of the house and a unifi AP on the other. I am only just starting to try to go through and see if I can improve it.

I also have a Luxul ABR-4400 Router that is not acting as the router that I am probably going to switch too away from the cox all in one unit. But I want to do one thing at a time.

I just ran across that testmy.net site actually. I just want to know that the potential for 150 is getting into my house...everything after that is on my setup and equipment. Cox says well I can send a tec but they dont do any wifi testing and it looks like your getting about what you should on our site.

Should I turn off the wireless radio on the modem too when I test it with testmy.net?

Idk how that thing works, but give it a shot. Also, test it at like 2 or 3am if you're up that late. I have a bunch of businesses on my node, and my speed drops like 30-40 points during the day

I think you're getting very close to what you pay for. Also, the speeds that are advertised crucially say "up to" somewhere in the fine print.

Well Cox can't do anything about your wireless performance. And the thing about wifi is speeds can drop dramatically with distance, interference, and line-of-sight obstacles. Speeds can also be erratic if multiple devices are connected (or even if just one device is connected).

I think if you just get a nice wireless router like a Nighthawk you will see much improvement in your wifi speeds. And make sure your devices are using wireless-n or -ac rather than -g.

I realize that, I was just kinda expecting to see at least over 100 at some point in time over the last 2 years of testing it at times...never not once...unless on the cox site. I just want to make sure im testing it properly at this point.

Yep...im just starting with the cox feed becasue if im starting with a lower speed than I should be then ill get lower speeds at distances too. Am I thinking that correctly...like if cox was shy 20-30mb then where I normally get 2-5 by the pond it might be 5-10 (just an example).

Once I know for sure all is good going to the house then I start adjusting my stuff.

I already have 2 routers now or I would get the nighthawk I see everyone talking about. I have the cox one and I have the Luxul I posted above. I got the Luxul when I built my house and had a company do some AV stuff...not sure why they decided not to use it as the router and went with the cox unit. But my goal is to use it since I paid for it and it seems to be good. I just have to do my own antenna witch wouldn't be a back thing. The closet the router is in is on one corner of my house with a lot of stuff around it to block it. I can get another unifi AP and mount it in a better location.

When you do speedtests, make sure you try multiple locations. Sometimes they get overloaded and the speed bottleneck is on their end.

Probably not. The bottleneck in this case is your wifi connection, so increasing the speed on the ISP end won't help.

That is all Cox can provide. If you're getting that kind of bandwidth to Cox's server, then you're getting your speeds. Once out on the Internet and off of Cox's network, Cox has no control over your speed.

Eta

WiFi is generally a horrible way to test your speeds. There are way too many variables that can be slowing down a wifi connection.

Try using https://speedof.me/

Per this site: Digital Trends

quote:

speedof.me is an HTML5-based speed test that’s lightweight and designed to replicate real-world browsing and downloading conditions by requesting a series of files in increasing size and recording the speed at which they’re downloaded. Not only does the site display a graph of speeds achieved in real-time, but also allows you to track your results against previous tests. Rather than selecting a location, the website calculates the quickest and most reliable server from 59 available servers, and all files are downloaded and uploaded in sequence–rather than simultaneously–to imitate real internet browsing conditions.
It's worth a shot.

Not unless you have business service with guaranteed speeds.

As a consumer you are paying for "up to 150 down"

I unplugged everything from the router and plugged my laptop up and used the testmy.net site. I got a bunch of 20s 130-140something. Couple 40s and one 80...I just kept hitting test again.

I'm not talking about the actual speed; I mean he's getting what hes paying for, whether he realizes it or not.

I realize its up too 150 but does that really mean 20-150? I know it will fluctuate but to me thats a big difference. I am stuck with Cox tho so im just trying to make sure its running as good as it can be.
