Yep back to back to back. I was hard wired into the modem with a older Mac. The modem was plugged into nothing else. Now I did not turn off wifi on the modem so there could have been things on it still I guess like my AC units thermostat, phone , other laptop...but no one doing anything on them I was the only one awake.

I am going to order that 16x surfboard today and see what that does. The real holdup on all of this is my security cameras. I didn't set up the system so I'm not familire with it...I know there are network setting on them and also for me to view them off the network. That's all router stuff so I'm hoping I can just turn off the modem in the cox box but leave it doing the routing for now. I'm waiting to hear back from the camera installers to see if I can swap my 24port switch to the new style that has the plugs on the back so it's a cleaner look in the rack. I also told them I want to ditch the cox box and migrate to the luxul router. In the mean time I'll get that new modem coming.

There is something up with the wifi now for sure. Since I got home yesterday max has been 7-8. That's not normal. I don't think I changed anything but testing channels on the router. I'll keep fooling with it. Thanks for the help so far.

At the very least, grab a new modem (easily returnable) to rule it out.

This...When Cox was insisting it was me, I went and bought a second modem..I had a tech come on site and he did his walk through and concluded that the issue was my modem..I pulled the new one out of the bag and asked him to install it (pretty sure he peed a little)...Low and behold, there was an issue further up the line, and the less people that knew, the better
ETA: I would never recommend an all in one combo thing....

Lol nice!

So once I get the modem if I hook coax feed to that and run the cat cable to the box box for router duty will I need to turn off some modem feature in the cox box or will it not be doing modem work since the coax is not hooked to it?

Just replace the modem you have with the new one..You'll have to call Cox and let them know a few numbers from the new one, but you should be good after that...Not saying it will solve your problems, but eliminating everything on your end is the best way to go

I don't antisapate it changing the wifi much until I tend to that part. I'm looking to get higher more consistent speeds plugged directly into it. I figure the AP's are only going to transmit what kind of signal they receive so that's where I'm starting.

Right now the cox provided ubee dd366. I have a luxul abr-4400 mounted in my rack that I plan to switch to. That unit is just a router so to that I'll use some unifi AP.

Speaking of the unifi AP's I'm realizing now the one that I have is just the LR model so it only does N so no 5hz that could be a reason the 5hz range is so bad. I know it's usually shorter than 2.4 but it's bad lol

Going to grab that 16x modem today at lunch. They also have (for not much more) a netgear CM600. Is it worth the extra like 10 bucks to get that one...its a 24x8.

Probably not. In your area, Cox almost certainly delivers broadband through only 12 downstream channels. So, as it stands, the 16-channel modem you're getting will have 4 unused. The argument can be made for "future proofing," but you'd have to be betting on the fact that Cox will roll out speed packages in your area ranging 300, 500, 600mbps with increased downstream channels before they deploy gigablast. Gigablast currently uses an Optical Network Terminal (from fiber to the home) rather than docsis 3.0. But I imagine Cox will begin using docsis 3.1 soon to roll out the service to older established areas instead of running fiber. In those cases, a docsis 3.0 modem would be either unusable or less than ideal.

Now, that said, it's only $10 more so it's not like you'd be throwing away a lot of money on a gamble.

Figured...what about the programming software and settings in the box...im guessing they are pretty much the same in that regard.

You can do little to nothing to alter your modem settings. Even firmware upgrades have to be managed by Cox. I don't know what, if anything, would make the CM600 perform better (ignoring number of downstream channels) than another modem. It's fairly new, and it's actually better to go with an older, more established modem that's been deployed long enough to have undergone several firmware updates and wider adoption (still keeping specs in mind, obviously).

I got the surf board. I called cox to make sure I have all my stuff ready to try and swap it out later tonight. Turns out they offer an upgrade ot the modem...the exact same one that I got today lol.

Interesting tidbit...after calling cox and telling them I was going to be hooking up the 16x4 tonight I got a email that seemed like my ultimate package was removed. So I called to ask wtf was that. Guy on the phone told me that he saw me on the 150 package and that it was just changed to the 300 package for the same price. So I dont know what I am going to be getting 150-200-300...but im paying $99 for it

Ah, you're in one of the special 300mbps areas. When you get the modem hooked up, go to 192.168.100.1 and take a screenshot. I'm curious if your area has more than 12 downstream channels.

Were you paying a rental fee on the all-in-one modem/router, and are they just offering to give you a new modem while still paying the rental? If so, tell them to frick off obviously.

Ha so it's really a thing...I figured the guy didn't know what he was talking about. When I signed up almost 2 years ago top package was 150. I don't think I was renting...99 for Internet and 30 for phone. I'll get some screen shots of what ever. They were not positive that the curent ubee box could act as a stand alone wifi router or not. I'd have to try it and see so I'll do that later tonight.

Don't use the Ubee at all. Eliminate it from the setup completely.

I will eventually. Right now I need it because my other router is not configured and I'm not 100% how with my camera system and remote access. So I'm just doing the modem part tonight. Waiting on my camera installers to answer a few questions for me. Then I have to decide on what I'll do for the wifi part. Steps unfortunately.

Tried that address and it doesn't pull up anything, but something is off anyway. The lady on thephone that helped me...eek. First a whole lot of "its not going to work, once I disconnected the ubee all in one it will shut off and not work anymore". Then to prove it to me she made the switch and activated the surfboard. So once that was connected I plugged it into the ubee and the one laptop I tested worked. So I got off the phone with her asap...it was painful. Before getting off I asked if she could tell me what speeds I should be getting (I didn't test while on the phone with her) she said it was the 200 package...so me thinks cox is hit or miss on who picks up.

Issue is now...my 2 laptops work....but not my cell? All I did was plug the modem in and get it connected.

So I took the ubee offline and hooked the laptop to it and was able to pull up that address. So I'm guessing some sort of conflict between the ubee and arris. Odd thing is laptops on wifi worked but not the phone nor a firetv plugged into the ubee. Connected with issues it said.

Little update. I could not get the ubee to work so I ditched it. Tried to get my luxul going but could not. I don't want to reset it I just need to get the info from the guys who set it up I'm guessing. This morning I put my old apple 4th gen airport extream on just to get wifi back in the house. This several year old unit and new modem is blowing that all in one ubee away. On my phone the most I ever see on a speedtest.net run was in the 40s sitting next to the box. Now I'm at 80 on 2.4hz...doubled just like that. Hard wired on my older MacBook I see 206 on speed test.net and before 80s - low 100s. I'll still route it to the luxul but it's a good step so far

I had Frontier FIOS for a period of time on their 50/50 plan and thought it was pretty good, except that I had to reboot that router/modem piece of crap 3-4 times a day. I ran a speed test and was getting speeds in the low 30’s, both up and down. In the end, I decided to go back to Comcast because of re-booting issue, and the fact that my wife did not like the channel selection and the “On Demand” choices.

I got an Arris Surfboard SB 6141 modem and a Linksys N600 router, and everything was fine, but my kids eventually started complaining that the speeds were slower, and when we’d stream movies on the TV, they would freeze up periodically.

I ran a speedtest, and I was getting 3 down and 2 up. No good, since we were paying for 150/10, so that wasn’t going to fly. I started by replacing the wireless card on my desktop with a dual band USB adapter. Now I was getting about 40 up and 10 down. I switched to the 5GHz channel and got 60 up and 10 down. Finally, I bought a new router – NetGear AC1750 R6400 – and now my wifi speeds increased to 170 up and 13 down (more than the advertised 150/10). I also want to note that the ethernet cable that came with my new router was much better than than the one I had previously been using to connect my router to my modem.

I definitely notice the difference, now.

The little I fooled with it so far there is a big difference even using the old Apple router. I plan to get into the luxul tonight and get it up and running if I can.
