section 8 is a huge problem in baton rouge. A huge number of apartments even the nice ones take section 8. The city needs to do something about trying to curtail where section 8 is allowed.

The Cottages are definitely going to change some policies after this. They can't afford to compete with the five brand new complexes with this shite going down. Someone will certainly be changing some policies after hundreds of parents and students call in bitching and trying to break lease.
There is no "policy" that can change the problems they have. Which are as you said a huge increase in competition, but with almost zero or negligible change in total number of students.
Also on a side note, not a single one of the people I know was renewing their lease in the cottages before this, and already in Groupme 3 buddies who live extremely close to the building are trying to get out of the remaining lease today.

I wish trump would campaign on abolishing section 8
Seeing that Housing was one of the 3 most important roles of the government....I'm guessing that won't happen.

Outside of parties at fraternity houses, I've never seen a random party with a DJ. I went to LSU for a long time and lived in BR for almost 10 years, partying hard the whole time. Never saw a random DJ party

That's what I meant by the random people that "hear about a party" and just go. Nobody wants that shite there. But the crowd gets so out of control that there's nothing you can do. That's why you just don't have parties if your not controlling who's coming in.

If I lived in the cottages Id be breaking my lease for sure. Anywhere two people are shot and killed is not somewhere I will live

How does a building get worn down in 3-4 years?? Say what you want about HUD and Section 8. To me, it sounds like the visceral problem here are the builders who build them like crap and the local government who allows them to build such cheap structures. Section 8 is a symptom, not the problem.

Southern students at the cottages?

Not trying to seem like an a-hole but I'm missing your point with the random DJ party thing can you explain what you're saying.

They build them as quickly and a cheaply as possible with the expectation of selling it once the "new complex" hype wears off. That is how 99% of the complexes around LSU work.
I do not think the government should be able to force owners to let Sec 8 tenants move in

Statement from Southern University.

It was a planned party, and the complex had to have knowledge of it. You can't just throw it up all stealth mode. Also, the other guy I replied to said those type of parties happen all of the time, which they don't

The cottages were still frat land when I lived there ... Now it's OMEGA land.

Oh well yea the parties are definitely planned all the time. It's just the ransoms that show up and ruin it. It always gets out of control. There's never any exclusivity. Anyone can cone if they hear about it. That's how you get the wrong crowd to a party.

What do you think the owners should do differently to prevent this stuff in the future

wtf how is housing an important role of the gov?

You can take that story and change up faces/names, and you have pretty much the common story for any apartment complex in this city. Which, by the way, we all say that you will ruin a section of the city when you put up a massive apartment complex.
