I asked about Blue Apron awhile back, and I'm thinking about giving it a try. But I've read some decent things about some of their competitors.

Who's tried any of these services? What's your experience?

It depends what are looking to get out of it. If you are looking for a quick meal you can throw together then blue apron is not it. I still don't see what they can't chop up the ingredients for you so you can literally throw it together. Chopping vegetables takes time if you are hoping for a meal after work.

Yeah, I saw that. I think the concept will last even if some companies drop out.

I tried blue apron because a friend gave us a free order, I didn't care for it. The food was pretty good, but I was still cooking every night because there are no leftovers. Furthermore, for some reason it felt like I was producing an unnecessary amount of dirty dishes too.

Edit: I also agree that the prep and cook times are not truly reflected on the menu cards provided, it takes longer.

I used homechef for a while. i really liked them. Every now and then one of the recipes turned out bad, but for the most part the stuff was great. the convenience alone made it worth it for me.

We get 3 meals a week from either Home Fresh or Plated. We switch depending on who offers what we think we'd like the most that week..Most of the meals are absolutely delicious and it's enough food for 2 people.

In BR, Chris' Specialty Meats sells those frozen blocks of chicken n sausage gumbo, baked potato soup, vegetable soup & and a few other things. You can't go wrong with these easy meals. Just heat the bags in a pot of boiling water and these items are very good....All this beats the hell out of crappy take out food.

We use Blue Apron and have been very impressed with the food. We have eaten things that I would have never tried on my own and my wife is becoming a better cook.

Agree about the prep time being an issue.
I tried Hello Fresh for a few weeks. The quality was very good and I liked the recipes, but I just didn't have the time to prep and cook.

We use plated. We get two meals delivered twice a month. I really like it. It puts together recipes where you usually say, "Why didn't I think of cooking like/with that." Plus it's nice to change it up a bit. All of the meals have been great so far. We have only had one meal where we didn't hate it, but definitely wouldn't order it again. My wife also likes the option to order strictly vegetarian.

love it, use BA and plated, Plated may be a little better and you have more choices but both are great. I do not look at it as a quick way to cook, but more as a way to try different things. all in all it takes about 45 min to prepare a meal so it is not too bad, but dont think you will just be throwing something in the microwave. I have had some meals that were exceptional and one or 2 that I did not care for (overall we have done about 25, so pretty good odds) Highly recommend if you like cooking, but f you are looking for a quick easy meal keep looking

I just got Managed Meals this week and it was awesome. I found out about it through the Baton Rouge Business Report and it's a local woman who started it and she delivers every Sunday. She's hot too! It's really good fresh cajun food and super cheap. I think she just started. The last day to order for her delivery on Sunday is tonight at midnight. I already signed up again. Here's the link.

I tried that Managed Meals last week and the food was really good cajun style you just pop in the microwave. That girl who delivered it was a smoke show too!

We did hello fresh for a few weeks, my big issue with it was they arrived on Thursday via UPS which gets to my house between 6:30-9pm.

We tend to eat out on Friday and Saturday nights, and usually cook something fun for dinner on sunday night.

This left me not using the first meal kit until monday night, by the following tuesday and wednesday some of the fresh ingredients (mostly the produce) had gone bad.

I asked to have my delivery date moved to Monday and they said it was not possible, so I quit using it.

The food was good though, some interesting recipes as well.

Fresh Kitchen is a relatively new place in BR that sells already prepared meals that follow a wide range of diets.

Yeah, I don't expect it to be ready to heat and eat. But it seems it saves time on obtaining the ingredients, has the portions measured and provides good (supposedly) recipes.

I did blue apron for 3 months. I really liked the way they packaged the food, the recipe cards were higher quality. I only once had a bad ingredient but i think I waited too long to make it. The food was good. They did have different recipes. We liked about 85% of the meals. Some are just too weird for my tastes and I did not like that if you didn't like one of the three auto chosen your options of changing to the bottom three offered were low.

I just switched to Home Chef last week. The food is not packaged as well as blue apron and the recipe cards are not as good. The food has been good so far. I don't like the way they package the goods. The green onion i got was already turning brown when I used it last night but that may be expected as I received the box Friday. I like that there are like 15 meals I can pick and choose from. They also offer smoothies you can add on and fruit baskets. The price was the same as blue apron unless you picked the "premium" meals. I find these meals more home cooking rather than exotic.

Here is my instagram if you want to check out some of hte blue apron and home chef meals I've cooked:

You take good photos. I followed.

The meals do look good and I like that most are things I'd never think to make myself (or that I'd pass up on a recipe website because I don't have many of the ingredients on hand). I like that you're kinda forced to make something you normally wouldn't.

The only thing that holds me back from these programs is that a lot of the ingredients they send you are things I keep stocked in the house anyway (butter, shallots/onions, green onions, garlic, bouillon cubes, etc.) so I feel like it would be cheaper for me to get the remaining ingredients than it would be for me to subscribe to something as expensive as these programs.
