I doubt the majority of people being forced out of gentrified neighborhoods were the original residents.

It is very racial. Most gentrified neighborhoods used to be African-American.

Its good.

It bothers me when people say "you're forcing all the black people out of their neighborhood!"

Actually, no one forced them to sell their house for 15x what they paid for it...they willingly just made a ton of money on their investment.

How is that bad?

The real perfect way would be to make a really nice neighborhood and let the hood rats live in it for free and pay for everything including maintenance and landscaping as well

These are called "projects" and they've had these for years.

Go see the new projects behind Walmart on Tchoupitoulas or on Louisiana & Claiborne (both built by HUD for roughly $300/square foot). They look like trash already, because they're still occupied by the same soap-opera watchers drinking on their porch at 10 AM on a weekday.

WTF

They don't have a greater right to be there. They have equal right to be there. This is absurd.

And they aren't forced to sell. They sell because they are offered absurd gains on the price they paid originally.

Wait, are they watching soap operas or drinking on their porch? I'm confused. Or are they drinking on their porch watching soap operas through the window?

Won't this whole thing turn into a "who is more disenfranchised" contest since most gentrification is started by the gays and happens in ethnic neighborhoods?

I reject the argument that one person has greater rights than another as it pertains to where they choose to live. I think this train of thought strengthens the position of the entitlement crowd.. Aren't we all created equal? Don't we have equal rights?

And before they were African American neighborhoods, they were predominately white. What's your point?

It is the truth. Why has there not been much gentrification in Detroit? Because the African-American local government would not give in to the interlopers. No development because they wanted both economic AND political power.

Gentrification was a big topic in one of my sociology classes. I'm well versed on the topic.

They're lazy multitaskers. Such folks' existence sounds like an oxymoron, but they're experts at maintaining a delicate balance among all things they do (watching TV, getting drunk, cashing government checks, growing fatherless households, etc.), all with a hyper focus on avoiding doing anything productive to society.

Bad when wealthy interlopers come in and intentionally displace a community, particularly an ethnic community.

Why is this particularly bad if it's an ethnic community?
