It's amazing that people still think this is a good idea.
Not every team is in a conference, and a conference championship refers to a fraction of a team's season. Just take the best however many teams regardless of conference affiliation. Jesus.

You do realize that the Ohio State got in solely on playing in the Big 10 Championship, winning, and becoming conference champions, right?

This has always been the issue; you have 5 conferences and ND
How you can make a "new" system that is still broken is beyond me. Looking back, to think that Baylor should have been ranked ahead of OSU last year is laughable, but there are a % of people, including OSU fans, who weren't sure how good OSU was in 2014. Last year there were absolutely 6 teams 'deserving' of the 4 spots. This year it worked out better for who should be in, but there were upsets during the year that although those 4 were the right teams to get in, they may not have been the strongest.
A system can't work perfectly every year, but if there is a year where the SEC and B1G champ have 2 losses each, and the other 3 have 1 loss champs and ND has 1 or 0 losses, there will be all out hell
since those 2 conferences have honestly a lot of the power

Didn't LSU have 2 losses (Kentucky and Arkansas) in 2007?
I admitted to being an LSU fan, so I am well aware. That is the only 2-loss title in the modern era. If a season like that happens, fine. Otherwise, no a 2 loss team should not have a shot with 5+ 1-loss teams in P5 conferences.

Keeping the BCS and going to 4 teams would have been ideal. It seems highly unlikely that the playoff committee did not consider this and chose the current format for financial reasons. That leaves me skeptical that they will make their decisions based on the integrity of the game.
And the "teams left out" point extends infinitely; going to 8 teams isnt gonna reduce the gray area.

quote:False. I was all over this on this board a year ago, and multiple Buckeye fans thought I was crazy for predicting what turned out to be right.
You do realize that the Ohio State got in solely on playing in the Big 10 Championship, winning, and becoming conference champions, right?
Going into the final week, OSU had a better record but slightly lower SOS than TCU, and it shook out with TCU slightly ahead; the Massey Composite, full of 100 different ranking systems, showed a majority alignment with this. In the final week, TCU played weak Iowa State, and OSU played strong Wisconsin. This bumped OSU's SOS a smidge ahead of TCU's, and when you combine that with the fact that 12-1 > 11-1, a vast majority of ranking systems put OSU ahead.
Ohio State got in ahead of TCU because they had a better record and tougher schedule. Turn off ESPN and get out a calculator. The committee got it right.

quote:Not ideal, but better in principle. A computer system or composite (and no polls) featuring formulas open to the public is ideal. This eliminates bias, agendas, and other chickenshit and puts the teams themselves in complete control of the general outcome.

This is my issue. Any expansion will be for political reasons, and not to add more worthy teams. I fully believe it would be the 5 P5 winners and at least 1 required non-P5 team to avoid it looking like anybody's feeling get hurt. Screw that.

That extra game against the other divisional champiop...in the (conference) Championship helps.

I like the idea of 8 but they have to move up the games. This would obviously add another week and I don't want college football going into February. As it is now I think the Championship game is too late.
Yep.
I'm already done with college football. I'll watch the NC, but I have no interest in it. It's not the teams or the game; it's the fact that college football ends on January 1st. You can maybe stretched it out a few days past that, but New Year's Day is the official conclusion of the league.

Because nearly every other team in the Top 5 had two losses. That year was an anomaly.
I'd rather one team get left out of playing for a championship than have 2-3 teams who are aren't worthy play for it. We simply can't take the regular season to the point where losing twice is inconsequential. I said this in another thread but the regular season in CFB is the best season in sports. Whoever wins the playoff has to win two tough games in a row but at the end of the day, that team is a very worthy champion and didn't backdoor their way into anything. Expanding to 8 would devalue it. Then the same douches who cry about the fairness of having 8 teams will want 16.
If we do expand, do we take away a regular season game? Do we get rid of or keep conference championship games? Moving from 4 to 8 changes a lot of the fundamentals of the college football season.

Yeah, they should have played the semi-finals on Sat 12/26, and the final last night (1/4) since they like doing Monday nights for their championships.

What happens when: Oregon goes 12-0 and wins the Pac 12 Ohio State goes 12-0 and wins the Big 10 Texas goes 12-0 and wins the Big 12 Florida State goes 12-0 and wins the ACC Alabama goes 12-0 and wins the SEC Notre Dame goes 12-0 (and doesn't play FSU that year in their ACC play)
What?! Something like this has never ever ever ever never ever happened.

quote:Yes. These two games account for 2/25 (8%) of the equation regarding these two teams. It's enough to affect the final outcome, of course, but to say that's the "sole" reason OSU got in is simply false. They got in because their 13 game results collectively were better than TCU's 12.
That extra game against the other divisional champiop...in the (conference) Championship helps.
And that's accounting for the fact that TCU's first 11 results were better than OSU's first 12.

8 teams is too many, in my opinion, but 6 teams is stupid. And this being an LSU site, after Alabama got a championship week bye? Tigers have seen first hand how much of an unfair advantage that is, I'd think they would be the last people advocating for more of that.
Posted on 1/5/16 at 4:04 pm to pkloa
It wasn't unfair to LSU. Alabama was #2. The #1 team plays the #2 team under the contemporaneous rules. Each team had more than a month off, so the one week bye doesn't really carry weight. The game was also played in LSU's back yard; I'd think that's a bigger advantage than Alabama's six week (as opposed to LSU's five week) break.
Hate to admit it because I'm an LSU grad.

When has this ever come close to happening. When you lose a game you lose your right to complain in a significant matter in college football. The only time in recent memory that this came close to happening was 2004 with usc ou and auburn. There will never be more than 4 (which is also never going to happen) power 5 undefeated conference champions.

- Best 8 seeded 1-8
- Top 4 get home games on New Years Eve and New Years Day.
- Then the remaining 4 are seeded and play out just like the current system of 4 teams with 2 bowls as semi-finals and a championship.
The 4 home games at the top 4 teams' campus would be awesome for college football with the traditions and pageantry, would generate revenue for the schools, and would help fans with traveling budget for the other playoff games.

Having 6 teams with 2 byes is an outrageously dumb idea IMO.
Either 4 or 8.
