Anybody can play these games, it's not like football where there are real restraints to the average fan going out on the field.
Anybody can play video games and anybody can play football. Will the average Joe be able to be competitive against NFL players or professional gamers? No. I don't understand where you are going with this.

Really? So if you wanted to go play football after work, you've got 21 friends ready to go? Unless you live in a wranglers commercial, I'd say probably not. But you can pop in a videogame and have the exact same experience as one of these guys.

Do you play golf?

Yes I do, and I think I see where you're going.

Okay, maybe football was a bad example
Let's use basketball like your other example.
You still have to have other people to play with like in other sports. Of course you can play against AI, but that's not what people are attending these events for.

He's not wrong. The video game championships for games like League pull in millions of dollars and viewers and the daily plays by the better players make tons of money too.

I have no problem with giving out scholarships or recruiting competitive gamers. There are scholarships for all sorts of activities out there.
I have a problem considering them student athletes though.

And you can find competition with humans online. Look I really don't care, if this becomes popular then hooray! I'm just saying I don't think it will. Let's pick up this discussion in two years so one of us can call the other an idiot.

It already is, do you know how much time and people filter through twitch?

Is this a LucasP post, or a LucasP post?

Obviously I don't, and honestly I don't care. But I'm not going to think about this for 731 days. I'll see you here November 19, 2017 when one of us will be called the idiot that we are. Good day.

Step in line boys. Rugby, Men's Soccer, Lacrosse have been waiting to be "student athletes" for decades. Gaming will never be more than a club. I mean if they want to have the UREC control them they're welcome to be a sport.

Watching people play will lose its novelty and this will pass just like the poker fervor.
the difference between esports and poker is that there is a virtually unlimited number of games that people play, poker is just one game. Add too that the fact that new competitive games are always being released. Kids that grew up playing these games are much more likely to watch them as a form of entertainment. So the fanbases for esports will more than likely continue to grow.
If your argument is that people will grow tired of watching others play games, why have we not grown tire of watching football, basketball baseball golf etc?

they show the "Esports" on espn sometimes. Saw the grand prize for one of the tournaments was 12.something million. that's more than the Masters. I could possibly see the idea the writer had but elevate it to club sport status next to quidditch (sp?) at most.
