Just to cruise around woods and fields, etc. Nothing fast. Dependable and sturdy.
What make and size would you Outdoor guys suggest?

My boy, 9 now, is fine with our 400. Just grata regular full sized bike.

We bought our son one of the chinese throwaways when he was 7. He rode it till it fell apart. He was learning the entire time. We upgraded him to a Honda Recon 250 last year when he turned 10. Thats a darn good bike.

a 220 or a 250 would be good for that age. I dont think there is really anything available between that and a 110, and the 110 would be small for him. A 250 he could ride basically forever.

Depends on the size and maturity of the kid.
I went from a Badger 80 to a 400ex. The 400ex was safer. That badger caught hell.

I appreciate that, Broke. He's been riding the crap out of mine and my pops...so decided to get him one of his own. Basically so he won't keep tearing mine up. I was getting an idea of what size u guys thought. I'm gonna stick with Honda.

250 hands down. He can use it til he's old as you.

We bought it new at Brookhaven Honda.

Please don't do this. So freaking dangerous if you do do on level surfaces. Graveyards of full of kids under 12 and these damn things

I just bought a honda recon 250 and i like it. Brand new with electric shift for 3700 at honda of lafayette. Its smaller than the bulky ranchers and has plenty of power. It can go anywhere he will need it to go. Also, if taken care of, itll last for years.

I got my first 4 wheeler when I was 29 and bought it myself.

You seem passionate about this. I understand what you are saying but I feel if it's done in a responsible manner, it can become very productive for him. The same way I feel about him having his own 410 shotgun. Expose it to him and learn the right way.

I gotta agree with Tut on this. There is absolutely no reason to rush a child onto an adult bike.
I'm working my 8 year old into a 70 cc three speed dirt bike and I won't let him take it out of first. LOL
The truth is, these machines hold their value like diamonds. Buy the right size bike, and if you have to sell it in a year, you lose pretty much nothing. If you have a little man coming up behind him like I do, you get even more use out of it. These bikes are serious machines. Be smart and take it slow with your son.

I have seen/heard of too many injuries on big heavy 4 wheelers and young kids. I don't know that I will ever hand the keys of one over to my boys till they are strong enough to manage it

I'll chime in on this issue, and i have to say that the statement is sad enough so true. i work in an operating room at a trauma one med center and if you spent 2 weeks with me during the summer you would never think of buying an ATV for a loved one.
Man i rode the shite out of 3 wheelers and 4 wheelers when i was a young'n but damn its hard to see kids lose their life or limbs over these things.

My dad got me a used 70cc Honda dirt bike when I was about 8. My mom was pissed She said first time we have to go to the hospital it was gone. I have several scars that wouldn't be as bad if I had told my parents to take me to get stitches but couldn't risk losing my bike.
