Tillie the dog is being hailed as a hero for watching over his canine best friend, Phoebe, for a whole week after the two strayed from home and Phoebe fell into a cistern, according to the dogs' rescuer and owner.

quote:

The two dogs escaped from their home in Vashon, Washington, when the front door was left ajar on Sept. 7, their owner B.J. Duft told ABC News, saying that he was hosting a company party that day and there was a lot of moving around.

quote:

"A community member said he saw a dog for the past few days coming up to his property, come up near him but not all the way, and then go back down a trail to a ravine behind the house," Carey told ABC News. "It turned out the dog was Tillie trying to get help for Phoebe, who had gotten stuck."

Carey said she immediately went out to the area to investigate and was relieved to discover Phoebe stuck in a cistern down the ravine -- and most amazing of all -- Tillie standing just above the cistern watching guard over Phoebe.

I love dogs. We had to rush ours this morning to the emergency clinic on Sherwood. Thought we were going to lose her.

Basset hounds have to be some of the saddest looking creatures on this planet. They always look like they're about to burst into tears

She doing okay? Biggest fear for sure. I don't even want her to get old and die someday.

Was expecting something deeper. But Dogs are great. They're loyal.

A lot of humans don't have that quality.

Yep! She went limp this morning and had white gums. I picked her up and she seemed like she got "shocked" from the picking up and was better when I put her in the vehicle. When we got there, nothing was wrong and she was totally fine. We got an X-Ray and found nothing. I think she had a panic attack. We just had twins and my mom and her dog, which is hyper, comes over much more often.

Thanks for asking though! We lost our male boxer last year around this time to a heart attack and right before we knew the babies were coming. The drive to the clinic seemed so familiar, it brought back some tough memories. Everything is great and she is acting normal and like nothing happened.

A real best friend would tell you you're a maroon.

I'll just tell you you're a moron.

Poor Basset :(

Their noses get the best of them and they won't be looking up when walking around. Their ears were designed to push ground scents towards their noses. I've had six Bassets and they all love to wander aimlessly if they get loose out of the yard.
