Planning a trip to Chicago in September. Tips?

I know there was a thread about somebody's great trip recently, but I couldn't find it when I searched. If someone can link it I'll reference it.
Plan is to attend at least one game at Wrigley and spend some time downtown. Don't mind staying in the burbs if there is transportation available, since cost look way cheaper outside of the main city.
I'd appreciate any info, particularly about reasonably priced hotels, from people who have been there or live in the area. It's just for a long weekend. TIA

eat at the purple pig
go to Chinatown
take a water taxi
ride the Ferris wheel at the pier
get a hot dog at portillos
get a beer and a burger at the billy goat

You don't wanna stay in the burbs, way too much of a hassle getting in to the city (unless by the burbs you mean lincoln park area).
The restaurant everyone talks about is girl and the goat. Pequods has the best pizza, not giordanos or one of the other chains. Green mill in uptown is Al Capone's old bar, Flyleaf is nearby and has an incredible duck Reuben. Ada Street is a nice restaurant if you can't get into girl and the goat. Similar menu, just not as extreme
Also, if coming with your SO, Odyssey Dinner cruises are legit

Buy a CityPass. It gives you admission to 5 major attractions for about the cost of 1 or 2 attractions. Field Museum is a must, as well as the observation deck at the old Sears tower. CityPass, bro. Might be just as cheap to stay downtown because of the cheap and convenient transportation there.

The Museum of Science and Industry in fantastic as is taking an architectural boat tour.

Just got back from Chicago a few weeks ago. Absolutely amazing city! Here are some thoughts:
Things to do:
1. Good plan on the game at Wrigley. I would check and see if they are doing the Wrigley tours (not sure if they offer this on game day, but do it if possible). Cubs were out of town when I was there, but the tour was great.
2. Science and Industry Museum - You may not be into museums, but they have the only U-boat ever captured in that thing. They offer tours through the inside of the boat, but you have to get there early in the day to reserve a ticket.
3. Do the Architecture river tour as someone already mentioned.
4. City pass is a good idea if you're going to do a lot of things. Just make sure you burn it on the more expensive attractions so that you get your money's worth.
5. Skydeck at the Willis Tower (formerly Sears tower). The glass ledge is cool, but I guarantee you'll step gently when you're out on that thing!
6. If you want to go up the Hancock Tower, don't go the observation deck, go to the signature lounge instead (either 1 floor above or below - can't remember which). There's no sense in paying the admission to the observation deck, when you can basically pay the same amount for a drink in the lounge and get the same view, but also have a drink.
7. Take a stroll down the Magnificent Mile on Mich Ave.
8. Millennium Park (The Bean is there)
9. If you're staying downtown, the subway is very easy to use for transportation. We stayed at The Palmer House. Great hotel and in the middle of everything. I would really recommend you spend the money and stay downtown if you have the means.
Where to eat:
1. Giordano's Pizza on Rusk. Best Pizza Ever! There's going to be an hour to 1.5 hour wait, but totally worth it.
2. Hotdogs or Italian Beef at Portillo's on Ontario (I think).
3. Breakfast at Yolk on Mich Ave.
4. I was recommended Gibson's for steaks, but we never made it.
5. Also heard good things about Lou Malnati's and Pequod's pizza.
