Was having a discussion about this topic and I want the MTV board's contributions.

What films were so awful that the actors/directors never recovered?

The first one to come to mind for me is the Halle Berry Catwoman film, her career has never recovered.

More recently, After Earth. Will Smith is never going to be the same box office draw he was before hitching his wagon to a Shymalan production.

Cutthroat Island famously killed Geena Davis's movie career in 1995. It was the biggest flop of all time at the time and might still be. She was a huge A-lister before that with A League of their Own, Thelma & Louise, and others.

I would say that Gigli ruined Ben Affleck as an actor in a way.

It took him directing some excellent movies which he in fact starred in to resurrect his career as an actor. Gone Girl was one of his first key lead roles in a movie he didn't direct in quite some time.

Dana Delany was an up and comer (China Beach, then Tombstone) when she chose to do Exit to Eden and her career hit a huge speed bump. She dropped off of the map for a couple of years. When she got back onto TV and showed up on Letterman, Dave asked why they hadn't seen her. When she tried to explain, Paul Shaffer shouted in, "She did that softcore movie with Danny Aykroyd!"

She went back to TV and her film career was pretty much done.

Taylor Kisch had back-to-back blockbuster busts in John Carter and Battleship. Don't expect him in anything major anytime soon.

The Superman curse struck Brandon Routh. He hasn't done anything since. The curse is undefeated so far - I hope Henry Cavill doesn't succumb to it.

I remember Exit to Eden. I just wish it had killed Rosie O'donel's career in totality.

You know he has his own series this Fall, right?

Routh was a nobody who's only real talent was to look like Christopher Reeve. Prior to Superman his roles included standing in the background of sitcoms and looking attractive.

No curse there.

Dean Cain went from nobody to having a career.

Tom Welling, same thing.

Kirk Allen had a good life.

You had one Superman actor commit suicide and one who had a terrible accident. Then you have half a dozen other actors who are doing fine. There's no Superman curse.

U serious? Will Smith won't be affected by After Earth.

He is one of the rare stars who transcends a bad movie or two. He will still draw, esp after being Deadshot.

Well that's not true at all. He hasn't really done much since After Earth, but the one movie he starred in (Focus) made $150 million on a $50 million budget. And he's got Suicide Squad coming out soon, which should be a fairly big hit.

Will Smith just seems to have pulled back from acting a bit since about 2008.

He was in Savages and Lone Survivor, both of which did pretty well at the box office. And he's one of the leads in the current season of True Detective.

I think Cuba Gooding, Jr. would be a good entry for this thread, but I'm not sure where to draw the line where his career just nose-dived. Boat Trip maybe?

Dean Cain had a career? Lol. Going from movies to TV is a demotion. Rough did an excellent job as superman, but he hasn't led a major movie since. Welling similarly has done nothing of note since smallevile. You are delusional.

Kitsch isn't the lead star in a major movie. that is a demotion from spearheading major elected blockbusters. He will likely never be that again.

He was decent in supporting role in American Gangster, but I agree, he seems to have disappeared.

Maybe its because he went "full retard" in radio?

Speaking of Superman Returns, Kate Bosworth's career has never recovered from that debacle either.

Did Costner do shite after Water World? Not that I recall.

Nicholas Cage has had numerous moments. I think the dagger to the heart was that frickin NOT THE BEES MOVIE.

True enough, but I don't believe for a second Suicide Squad will be a hit BECAUSE of Will Smith. They coulda cast any a-hole to play Deadshot and people will still line up to see it. But perhaps it will be a good career rehab for him.

Last Boy Scout killed Damon Wayans' burgeoning film career and almost brought down Bruce Willis.

That's how bad it was.
