Never followed up on it myself but I believe someone on this board mentioned how that was by designed. The guy just didn't care much for the spotlight or being a big movie star.
I wanted to submit Brendan Fraser to this thread, but then I couldn't figure out what movie would have killed him. Then I realized he only really had one big role in his career anyway (the Mummy, although I did like George of the Jungle as a kid).

None of you guys think that the actors chose to take a different route after the productions started to die down due to...say...family?
TV is a better schedule to work around to start and raise a family. A lot of the actors you are listing have had successful TV careers.

Showgirls killed Jessie Spano and Paul Verhoeven's careers
THRUST IT! THRUST IT!
I can't believe PV directed it, but considering the fact that Starship Troopers came out 2 years later, I wouldn't say it ruined him.
And although I'd love for After Earth to have ruined Will Smith's career, I'll just have to settle for it most likely (hopefully) keeping studios from casting Jaden's little wacko dipshit arse in anything ever again.

Katherine Heigl- Name any movie

I couldn't remember if Showgirls came before or after Starship Troopers. I don't think Verhoeven has done anything since then. He really needs to come back.

Right - his was a "reverse" kill - in that Mummy made his career, and he didn't do anything else with it.
The "Mark Hamill" syndrome.

I literally LOL'd at
Those two are great movies and did no harm to anyone's careers. Very lol indeed
To the OP, the first thought that came to mind was Faye Dunaway. She went from Chinatown to Three Days of the Condor to her academy winning Network to a laughing stock. To this day she hates when anyone mentions MD due to the career killing film it was.

Mark hamill is one of the most respected voice actors of all time in addition to being Luke. So...just because he didn't want to/have to go balls to the wall in acting, didn't mean he couldn't.

Also, Xanadu pretty much killed Micheal Beck's career.

He really needs to come back.
A lot of people hate on ST and Robocop, but if you view them as dystopian, comedic comments on modern society and where he thought it was heading, you can see how truly brilliant he was.

The Passion killed Mel Gibson's career with a slow burn. How you might ask? By putting him on the "radar" so that he would be an easy target to tear down.
Actors, everywhere, are crazy and contemptuous - See Penn, Travolta, Paltrow - but it was only a matter of time for Gibson after The Passion.

Voice acting isn't film acting. His film acting career - outside of Star Wars - was hampered by a number of things - most notably, facial injuries he received 1977.
But, I stand by it - he's sort of the quintessential "one hit wonder" film actor - he wasn't classically good-looking to begin with. But, he played the lead character in one of the "blockbusteriest" film franchises of all time - then did, almost literally, nothing else. Certainly nothing of note.
His voice acting speaks for itself, but that isn't quite the same thing, as I said.
It's difficult to find anything comparable - most competing examples involve child actors, (Culkin) often in horror films (Linda Blair, Danny Lloyd).
I mean, Paul Hogan was huge for a short while, but nothing like Hamill was within Star Wars (and nowhere else).
Back to the OP - I'm trying to figure out if we should be including roles that got an actor typecast or not in this. I mean bad or awkward performances derailing a, up to that point, successful career is one category.
A role that is so definitive that it makes it nearly impossible for the actor to do anything remotely different - ever again - (something else - generally the mark of a great performance) - despite a generally high opinion of the actor's abilities.
Psycho for Anthony Perkins, Goodfellas for Ray Liotta are 2 notable examples. A younger actor who is feeling this now (and it may end up derailing his career) is Michael Cera.

How much better would the original Star Wars have been had Hammill played Luke while using the voice of the Joker the entire time?

Star Wars Episode 1 ruined the kid who played young Anakin's life pretty much. Surprisingly Ewan McGreggor and Liam Neesons recovered nicely

How about Hayden Christensen?
2 Star Wars movies
"Jumper"
Disappeared.

I think it had more to do with him hating on the jews. Apocalypto was actually pretty good.

Medellin slowed down Vinnie Chase's career for a good little bit
