WWL-TV just aired a report about feral hogs damaging West Bank flood control levees. They've spent $25,000 over the past year and have killed 64 hogs. They just allocated another $15,000 to continue the program.

That's about $390/hog. I've gotta believe that Bleeding Purple and some of the other OB hog hunters could kill more, faster and cheaper.

A couple rednecks with hog dogs and side by sides could pile that many up in a few nights.

If there is a more dishonest, worthless "board" in Louisiana then the Levee Board I don't know what it is.

Honorable mention to the extrodinairly worthless Casueway Commission, the Bridge Police.

I certainly wouldn't be surprised if I heard that whoever is conducting the hunts is an acquaintance of one or more board members!

They're supposedly using Jefferson Parish Sheriff Sharpshooters...

So they're likely paying these guys detail pay(overtime) to kill feral hogs.

As many have said here and on comment threads on Facebook, why not treat this like the nutria problem? They allowed people to buy a certain # of special licenses and gave them $5/tail they turned in.

Even at $50 or even $100/hog it's still less than half the cost they're spending now.

Stupidity and ignorance... Runs rampant in politics...

High sure, but I'll bet that one hog can do more than $309 in damage to a levee.

Now that video with the propane tank seems relevant

If that is what they are doing I have zero issue with them spending it that way. I would rather see civil service members getting the money for hours they put in off the clock than someone's nephew.

I have no doubt that they can tear some shite up. I saw a report about it maybe six months or a year ago. There was a large area, at least 100' x 100', that had been rooted up the previous evening. It looked like someone had run a tiller over it.

The hogs have to go, or at least be controlled as best they can.

What about letting people shoot them for free?

Good idea, but would never happen due to insurance requirements, etc.

Purdy damn sure I'd put a dent in that arse for a lot less money especially if I get to keep the hogs

Excuse my ignorance, but why couldn't they just roll it up under a wma or run it like that? Just make everyone but a license and put up a self clearing station.

I've always heard that it is illegal to discharge a firearm behind the levee in certain areas, because the Mississippi River is an International Waterway up to a certain point due to ship access. I could be wrong.

ETA - ...and by someone's nephew I meant an elected officials nephew.

There are many, and not all are dishonest. I doubt any are worthless.

^^^

This X 1,000,000

They go on private land and tell private property owners what to do with levees. They can make you spend $30,000 on maintenance if they have it out for you.
