Cooking for the girlfriend and another guest this Saturday. Want to try something different.

For the main dish I'm going with a family style 7 flavor beef with steamed rice

Looking for some ideas for starters whether it be salad, soup, or other appetizers

Preferably I'd like it to be something that can't be found at any run of the mill Vietnamese place.

Also, I don't mind steering away from Vietnamese if a Chinese/Thai/Malaysian/Singapore type dish would go well with the main.

I'm stumped

So I guess I'd be an arse if I didn't update with pics and some explanation of my nonsense so here we go.

Seven Flavor Beef: The 7 flavors are

Lemongrass
Ginger
Garlic
Sesame Oil
Chinese 5 Spice
Dried red chili flakes
Fish Sauce

Used a skirt steak cut against the grain and marinaded with the 7 flavors. Marinade recipe I had was a bit dry and pasty so I added a little more sesame oil and a bit of sochu to get the liquid in.

To plate the dish, take one thinly sliced red onion and some bean sprouts and cook on high heat for about a minute or so. Then sear the beef and cook until medium rare, fairly quick process given the thickness of the cuts. Toss with a couple tablespoons hoisin sauce, garnish with green onions, ground peanuts, and thai basil. I served with Jasmine rice.

Close up

Made some spicy fried shrimp as an app

The batter is a bit odd, I'd post the recipe but I'd rather give credit to the source. Got it from rasamalaysia website. I'd highly recommend her cookbook "Easy Chinese Recipes" Her website is also a treasure trove for great recipes throughout Asia.

I did change up the recipe a bit. I put more hot sauce and also added some of the mae ploy sweet chili sauce. Garnished with green onions which wasn't mentioned in recipe, thought it gave it a little more color.

Do a pho. The base can be bought very cheaply at an Asian grocery...either canned or condensed.

Get some pot stickers or Vietnamese egg rolls, too. You're covered.

A green papaya salad is authentic and awesome. I haven't made one, but the recipes are easy and available online.

Make Nuoc Cham dipping sauce

This one looks good

More simple and probably better

and Spring rolls

Look up a recipe For Vietnamese Spring Rolls. They vary a little, but are mostly the same in my book. I love these guys dipped in Nuoc Cham.

Need Vietnamese Soup. Here is the basics of a good one.

Crab and Shrimp Udon Soup Bánh Canh Cua Tôm

edited to add:

Looking at the posts above me, there are several good Vietnamese pancake dishes that I forgot.

Rice flour, Turmeric, coconut cream, Bird's eye chillies,Carrots bean sprouts, green onions, mint, shrimp or pork.

Look up a recipe and pick the one you like. There are lots of them, usually stuffed with Nuoc Cham served along side

1. Go the frozen section in an asian market up and pick up a pack of LINK / . Each pack contains about 50 mini egg rolls (as good or better than homemade).

2. Get a bottle of LINK for the dipping sauce.

3. Get some squid and seaweed salad also.

Egg rolls seem easy enough. I might use their Nuoc Mam Sauce in lieu of the sweet chili sauce

People can butcher that fish sauce easily. Sweet chili is a just a safer alternative that's all

Follow MeridianDog's lead. Spring rolls and make some peanut sauce for the app.

Another vote for shrimp spring roll app. It's pretty "run of the mill", but delicious and would pair well with your main dish. Wife does them about once a month, looks fairly easy. She boils the shrimp in crab boil to give them good flavor and heat. If you're looking for something a little less time consuming, there are plenty of recipes out there for various types of lettuce wraps.

Don't let anyone ever tell you that you are not worth some extra work.

Oh you meant they aren't worth the extra effort.

Then make the soup for you and send them to McDonalds.

Beat me to it.
These eggrolls are the next best thing to homemade ones.

Another suggestion in lieu of eggrolls would be crab and corn egg drop soup(sup bap cua) or sugarcane shrimp(chao tom).

For dessert, if you want something simple, Vietnamese iced coffee with condense milk(Ca phe sua da) or adventurous Asian fruit cocktail(Che Thai).

We do lettuce wraps a lot and they are good. Usually just have them and a bowl of soup
