I would pick BR over Houston and the new Governor will help health care greatly when Medicare expansion is approved. Just a matter of time. Getting rid of Jindel should help the State.

I have heard that the academic/magnet track in the BR public schools is actually pretty good. Is that wrong?

You're not wrong. I was just referring to the overall system and how it got to where it is now. Speaking of magnet schools, BR High School is supposedly very good.

Welcome home.

I'm stoked to read some people on here who have moved back like we did - or are considering it. 5 years ago, almost no one would ever consider it. Yes, Louisiana has problems, and life sometimes here is very hard... but it's probably a better situation now to live here than it has been in at least the last 50 years.

But shouldn't you put YOUR (immediate) family above others? It almost seems selfish to sacrifice YOUR (immediate) family for the company of other friends and relatives. Besides, Houston is only a 4 hour straight shot from Baton Rouge. It isn't like you're traveling cross country. Houston, hands down, has better schools (public and private) than Baton Rouge. 9/10 Houston jobs pay more than Baton Rouge jobs (helping you put away for college tuition, retirement, 401k, Roths, etc.)

Some people think putting your family first means more than material things. Just an idea.

I can't give specific advice on Houston/Baton Rouge....but I contemplate moving back south from the west coast daily. I. The end the financial security and opportunity keep me in California over Alabama. Family is important but peace and no stress about money holds a great deal of value for your immediate family. Good luck in making your decision. Once you do, own it and never look back.

Two places in Louisiana I would never move to. New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Though there are not many places in Louisiana that are worth a damn, to begin with. A lot of backwoods trashy cities, with low quality people. Bout the only one I feel comfortable in is Lafayette. There are no where near that many opportunities compared to Houston. Every Engineer I know is living out of state for the very same reason. One of Louisiana's biggest problems is that they can't keep their brightest in state.

I know 9 doctors in BR from Texas alone, all graduated from UT med school. I know 2 from Boston and two from Ohio. All love it here and make damn good livings and are here by choice.

Start looking for work, you can't make the decision before you have options. Can you do anything else besides O&G, most engineering curriculums should have prepared you for such.

I'm not from Louisiana but my wife and I moved from Alabama to North Carolina after we married and made tons of money, life was comfortable. We moved back to Alabama after 4 years thinking similar thoughts as you.... Take the lower salary, but be closer to extended family. Well, after 2.5 years and 2 kids we left Alabama again and now live in Florida with higher wages and no income tax. it's hard to adjust to being poorer. We live 5 hours from relatives now, so leave work at four and your back to your hometown by 9.

Seems like the overwhelming majority had to settle for income losses to move back home. I guess I was fortunate in that I was the opposite. BTW - I'm also in engineering but not O&G

Come on man! Don't be stupid. Drive through Baton Rouge for a week straight during 5 o'clock traffic and you will want to stay in Houston.

I'm about where I'd be at if I had stayed in Houston....maybe a little more

ETA: main thing for me is I don't have a 30 mile commute from cinco ranch to downtown

and when you move inside the loop those good public schools and affordable homes are nonexistent

Agreed, for us... while we made less money we also had less expenses. So the net for us was pretty close. To me, we are not "poorer" (or at least it doesn't feel that way) but maybe we have a few pennies less in the savings account.

I'll take BR crime over Houston crime any day.

Crime in BR is largely confined to one section of the city, not so in Houston.

You serious, Clark? Cars get broken into all over the city. Doesn't matter if you live off Highland by CCLA or near Gardere. Also no place you can feel comfortable taking a run after dark.

Houston crime is scattered as well, but also much lower than BR per capita.

This has been one of the more interesting threads on the OT in a while, and the trolls have been kept somewhat in control. I do find it interesting that a lot of the people who have moved back have basically said to really think about it and do what is best, while many of the ones that have not just have bashed LA.

I guess the money thing depends on industry. For us, it was a hit, but it was basically a hit to savings and spending money, and with a lower cost of living, the net is close. But I think the big, huge thing is tuition. When we moved back the idea was the girls would go to public schools, because they were supposedly "better", however, we found after using them for two years, that was not the case, and we put our oldest in catholic school (youngest is still in pre-school).

Between the two we pay about 9K. If we were still in Katy, my oldest would be in public school, and my youngest would be in pre-school at a cost of about 8K. So right now, it's only 1K more. By comparison, when we lived in Katy, we were paying about 16K for the two of them. However, in a couple of years, my youngest would be able to go to public school also, and at that time, we would be paying 0 in Katy, and we are paying 9K now.

However to me, since we always spent that money, it doesn't feel so bad that we continue to spend less money, even though eventually, if we were in Houston, we would spend no money on schooling at some point.

If LA could get it's act together with public schools, this state would be absolutely booming with new residents.
