What part?

We lived in Huntersville (Charlotte burb). It had all the 'quality of life' extras people talk about. But like anything, it also had its negatives. Tax season for one

Charlotte proper. My wife is doing her Residency at CHS.

if they want to continue to provide TOPS

This is the type of question/opinion I originally was meaning to ask for in my first post. With the state budget the way it is, what is the likelihood this program eventually gets cut? Someone said healthcare is booming in BR right now, but didn't they just close the mid-city ER for BR General? What do you who live there see happening with these types of things? Am I wrong, but will the only ER around BR be OLOL and BR general on around Bluebonnet? Are these the closest options to Prairieville? Zachary? I don't think there is one West over the bridge either unless I'm mistaken.

Zero. It's a sacred cow. The only thing they are looking at is allowing LSU to raise tuition while not forcing TOPS to cover the increase. LSU will no longer be free, but it will still be dirt cheap.

What they need to do is level out based on your performance determining which schools TOPS will pay for a student to attend.

Well then you should get to claim some relief from uncle Sam.

Being a full blown taxpayer in NC suuuuuuucked. Toss in being a boat owner, hunter, fisherman, and substantial gas user, I was fuuuuuuuuucked.

They just closed the ER. However, this is coming off the heals of the closing of Earl K. Long hospital in north Baton Rouge just a few years back.

Healthcare is booming in New Orleans due to massive investments in the medical schools and VA hospitals, but it's floundering in the rest of the state due to Obamacare and Jindal's bungling of the privatization of the Charity Hospital system.

There isn't an ER, technically, but they handle many such patients at St. Elizabeth in Gonzales. Also, there is an ER in either Plaquamines or Donaldsonville. There is also an ER at Lane in Zachary.

The simple answer is that there is no money in treating Medicaid patients who go to the ER for everything and do so no matter if they have insurance or not. There is no money to pay for their services, but they cannot be denied, so whatever hospital they are sent to (was EKL, then the BR General, now OLOL) will be crippled financially.

Is that one of the local hospitals had to shut down?

Pay in Louisiana is horrible for most hospital medical professionals.

TOPS will be around in some form or fashion. They may cut a bit around the edges, maybe cover not as much, maybe stratify what schools you can attend based on GPA. In the end, though, smart kids will get to attend LSU for nearly no tuition cost and somewhat smart kids might get to attend another state school for nearly no cost.

The ER situation with uncompensated care is a mess. The state is going to have to end up accepting the Medicaid expansion at some point. It's not an ideal plan by any means, but, what we have isn't working, either.

I think the decision to go private on the hospitals was a good one, but in typical Jindal fashion, they overestimated the savings. It will work itself out.

Louisiana will always be home for me too (Houston O&G eng. here). However, I cannot justify the loss of income to my wife and daughter (she's 1 you freaks ). I want to move back one day, but I need a good opportunity.

Houston has better schools (suburbs)
Cheaper housing (suburbs)
More employment opportunities

Maybe one day I'll head back to LA, but not now

I know this is more of a BR thread, but... NOLA Development

Now obviously this is a first brush rendering of something that, if it were to ever happen, would take years to happen.

But, the Four Seasons is happening. There is major development all over the place. The city is turning the corner. It has a long path ahead (and we have got to figure out the crime) but there is an energy and excitement and attitude around here that hasn't been here in decades.

I love nola, and will always consider it home... but what happens if/when another major hurricane comes through?

I've traveled a lot around the country and the general sentiment has always been that there were so many federal dollars pumped into the state to rebuild (which has led to where it is today), far fewer people outside of Louisiana would support to rebuild it again..
