Bike people: need advice.

Buying a new bike. My 27 year old Schwinn hybrid (which I got as a college graduation present) finally died. I'm in the market.
I have a bad neck, so I need to ride in a more upright (erect) position. I am looking at "comfort" bikes. Any recommendations? Want to keep it sub-$500. I like the Giant Sedona.
Also, rigid fork or suspended fork? I have been told rigid unless I will be doing lots of off-road stuff (which I won't be), and that the rigid fork is one less moving part that could break.
I'm betting most of you like it rigid.

"You think that's a Schwinn!"

A suspension fork is going to waste a lot of your energy if you are riding on the road. A rigid bike lets you transfer power more efficiently. But if you go off road, the suspension will be helpful.
I don't exactly know what type of bike you are looking at, but I know you can do a lot to a road bike to have it "fit" to you. You can swap stem length and angle to adjust your body position. I don't know much about swapping those out to get more upright as most people are trying to drop them to get more aerodynamic, but I would assume there are parts out there to do the opposite. I've seen some guys riding in a very upright position with a noticeably different stem/handlebar geometry. I doubt their bikes were mass produced that way.

Whatever you decide, just remember that you own the roads, not cars.

They don't let them go to the restroom?

The sedona is a great bike. I worked in bike shops for 8 years. Giants give a lot of bike for the money. However the suspension forks on a sub $500 bike are worthless. If you can't lock it out don't bother.

I was glad you were talking about a real bike when I opened this thread. I didn't want you to grind that other guy's gears.

If I put my bike mechanic pants on then really sub $5,000.00 bikes are worthless

Yep. My Cannondale has a front suspension but you can lock it. I love it. Leave it locked most of the time when on the road or riding around the park with my daughter. But I can adjust it like 5 different ways.

If you really think the RockShox X30 is worthless, well, you're an idiot.
