Jon Gruden perplexed about Marcus Mariota not being the consensus #1 prospect

“I don’t understand why [Mariota] isn’t the No. 1 player in this draft on Mel Kiper’s Big Board,” Gruden said, via Rotoworld.
Gruden disagrees with those who think Mariota is a product of Oregon’s offense and not a fit for the NFL.
“I don’t know anybody in this draft that can do for a football team what Mariota can do,” Gruden said. “He can read the field. That whole thing about Oregon being a no-huddle, dive-option team, that is just a narrative resulting from a lack of information. The Ducks run a lot of pro-style concepts. Mariota does a lot with the protections. I’ve seen him throw the ball with touch and timing in tight windows.” The former Bucs coach points out that Mariota is the same size as Jameis Winston but runs 4.52 forty. He is incredibly elusive, and man, is he a playmaker and a great competitor. I see him functioning in the pocket, out of the pocket, and if you want to run a zone-read, he’ll rip the defense apart. He is like Russell Wilson, only he is 6-4.”

The majority of this board about to crash on you for posting something giving Mariota props.

Maybe that's why Gruden can't get a job.

I agree. I would take mariota at #1 no question but that's just me

Let Cleveland give up 2 1st round picks for him. Headed for another Akili Smith in Ohio.

Gotta say, I don't quite get the Winston hype. Not because of any off the field stuff, but because he's slow and has a long, awkward release. Seriously, why does no one mention Winston's incredibly long and robotic looking wind up? If they do, I never hear it.
I think both guys have a lot of the attributes you look for in a QB, most importantly football IQ and leadership. Mariota is a better athlete with a quicker release. Can't say I know a ton about either of them going through their progressions other than what I've seen in a few games, but both scan the field quickly. Add in all the off-field stuff, and I really don't see why you'd take Winston. I thought RG3 was right there with Luck though, so I don't really know shite

Id take him at 1 if I needed a qb.. But I don't see him being worthy of trading multiple ones and other considerations Just to move up and grab him.. He has some questionable aspects to his game..

I heard somebody quote a stat that said his completion percentage drops 24% when throwing to his 2nd read (or subsequent reads). I've never heard that stat given on any other QB so I can't put it in context to compare others. Seems like a big drop especially against some of the shite defenses he faced, but who knows.

The more I watch Winston, the more I think he's gonna be a star, Pro Bowl level QB.

Has gruden ever said anything bad about a player? It seems like all he does is fluff up every player he talks about.
shite. He was even saying Jennings was a good QB when he called the Norte damne vs LSU game

Gruden says nice stuff about players all the time.
just watch Monday Night Football.
about the only time where he didn't have any cards to play was when Josh Freeman stunk up the field for the Vikings.
actually, I think he did question why in the hell they started and stuck with him the whole game.
so nevermind. In a way, he defended Freeman which I didn't disagree with really.
Gruden is just a super positive guy 90% of the time. Should be a real contrarian tomorrow night at the draft for all the fans carrying pitchforks out there.
same story, different year.

I'd be more comfortable taking him than Jameis. He's got the physical tools but I wouldn't want him unless I had Jimbo coming with him. I just don't trust him.

Gruden also said Manziel should be picked first overall last year so...

There is a reason he isnt a HC in the NFL anymore.

I think Marcus would be mediocre at best on most teams in the nfl. I think he would Excell in Philly under chip. Maybe the rest of the league thinks so too

Gruden would have taken JFF at #1 last year.
