Ancient maps. Roman history. We lost most of Cicero's works, Caesar's, other Roman historians. I hope that idiot rots in hell for what he did. Hell, Sulla wrote a biography of Marius. I bet THAT would be entertaining to read.

Many things were lost over the centuries.

Until the muslims got at it. Then, the entire library was lost.

I think accurate accounting of ancient civilizations would've still been fairly sparse.....at the time of the burning and before, they didn't have the archeological capabilities as we have today. So, the details of those civilizations wouldn't have been to the level we discover today.

I love when there is a history thread asking about something specific and someone comes in and changes the subject to try and look smart.

Just trying to add to a thread about an overrated event that probably never even happened...

An event that attracts dummies like the one above.

How to build a crappy coffee place in every bookstore in the known world and ruin them with pretentious assholes reading some obscure works by Homer, from his young rebellious days of course and not his more mature stuff that he wrote.

TIger1242, I've watched you start threads on ancient history for a while now, and don't get me wrong. I enjoy seeing discussions about ancient history. I'm just not so sure that you enjoy them. You are consistently unfriendly to people who respond in your threads, and you should be more open to people who not only just wish to talk about ancient history, but also those who disagree with you about it.

Scholarly history is an ongoing conversation of people with divergent points of view and interests. Did anything Bayou Sam said make you want to look up what he brought up... or make anyone else in the thread want to do so? If so, then it was a worthwhile post.

Lighten up, man. History isn't a dick-measuring contest. You don't get a prize for "looking smartest in his own thread."

My feelings exactly on this thread, but I really don't recall this specific poster.

Not sure why that response to the reply.

I found his response to be worthy.

A lot was lost. It was the most important library of knowledge in the world at the time.

Yep, they have a pretty good idea of what was lost by things being referenced in works that survived.

The big losses were in engineering, medicine, history and literature.

Yeah but most of the same coloring books are in the Shreveport library so it's not so bad
