Wow, I didn't realize so many people here hate this movie. I like it

Man, I hate that movie.
Hate is too strong for me - just wholly disappointed - such a great storyteller (at least before then ) - compelling, complex for such simple fare - the nature of humanity was front and center in his previous films, along with fate, destiny what have you.
And he got some compelling performances in his earlier films. It seems like he got the budget he wanted, cast he wanted, and either he, the story itself, the leads or a combination of the 3 all failed.
I mean, you can see good performances in the film, Zane, Paxton, Bates, Zarber, Hill, Braeden - but, unfortunately, in the film's massive running time, we saw too little of them and too much of fat chick and "wooden indian" Leo - just terrible - and they got most of the accolades...
Talk about a passion-less, chemistry-less romance. I mean there were flashes, but at times, it appears we're watching a filmed walkthrough, not the final scene intended for the audience.
The movie has not tempted me for a rewatch even once, despite the good supporting performances and stunning visuals.

The wreck of the Titanic interests me...even if it is dramatized and given a sappy love story.

frick Rose.
frick her for killing Leo. I don't care who says what, there was plenty of space and buoyancy on that door that he could have climbed on board.
"I'll never let go!"
:let's go:
That's not to even get me started on her shtick with the gem. All the time and money wasted for that shite.
Exactly what I came to say. Rose is the biggest whore since Jenny of Forrest Gump.

True, but you also said this:

But, hasn't made a good movie since, though.
While I don't want to completely disagree with you, he's only made two movies since, and both of them made more money than any other movie in the history of the world. So that's not exactly a knock against him.

Because Rose is a selfish bitch

Same for me. I've seen it all the way through only once, and that was about ten years ago. I just never felt like it would be something I liked very much, and I was right. It wasn't a waste of three hours or anything, but it wasn't anything special.
I have watched the climax several times on TV since then though, because the visuals anad SFX are pretty awesome.

So that old woman, she's just a liar, right?

Personally I've never thought that Cameron was a GREAT storyteller. I think he's just a great entertainer. I even enjoy the visual experience of Avatar even though the movie was not great. His Terminator stories are great, but that's about it for me.

Titanic would likely make my top 250 if for no other reason than I would exclude animated films as I consider them to be in a separate category. Acting is a significant part of the quality of a movie and that excludes animated films.

Because using the male "self-sacrificing" theme is old, redundant, and cliche.

Rose was a terrible, terrible person who let Jack die because she wanted him to comfort her while her spoiled self sat on the door. She should have told him to find some other bouyant object to float on. She didn't even give him a chance.
Jack was a relatively decent and resourceful guy who fell in love with the wrong girl for no good reason whatsoever. He should have lived.
The whole movie was utterly stupid and I really hate it. Rose lived an utterly selfish life and James Cameron billed it as "salvation." Rose said that Jack saved her in every way she could be saved. If that is true, then Cameron's vision of salvation is a deplorable.
Then, to top it off, Rose throws the diamond into the sea. The diamond that she held onto her whole life. It could have provided for her granddaughter after she died 5 minutes later from being 1000 years old. It also would have been a treasure for people all over the world to marvel over. But, no. She had to throw it into the sea to commemorate the way that she threw Jack into the sea in her other great selfish act in her life.
Man, I hate that movie.

See my original statement. Hes a hell of a marketer.
Cameron has the ability to play the Hollywood media to champion his cause, and he does it like a surgeon. It only helps that his political leanings generally fall in line with the stuff Hollywood eats up. If I recall correctly, didn't he ask for a moment of silence for the Titanic victims at his Oscar acceptance speech? Think about that for a moment.

it's really strange why some people hate the movie so much. i agree with the OP that the love story was a bit cheesy, but overall it was an excellent movie and deserving of the awards it received.

You don't think voice acting is a talent...or better yet, acting?

Again, I don't disagree, but you don't eclipse $a.8 billion and $2.7 billion on "marketing." There is a lot more to it than that, and making solid movies is definitely part of it...even moreso than marketing because if your mivie flat our sucks and isn't good, people aren't gonna continue to go see them.
But we're almost arguing differnt things at this point, and we don't even really disagree.
