it's really strange why some people hate the movie so much
To be fair, most people here don't hate it as much as they just don't think it's extraordinarily good, and certainly not warranted to be in the discussion for top 250 movies of ALL TIME.

Rose was a terrible, terrible person who let Jack die because she wanted him to comfort her while her spoiled self sat on the door. She should have told him to find some other bouyant object to float on. She didn't even give him a chance.
Jack was a relatively decent and resourceful guy who fell in love with the wrong girl for no good reason whatsoever. He should have lived.
The whole movie was utterly stupid and I really hate it. Rose lived an utterly selfish life and James Cameron billed it as "salvation." Rose said that Jack saved her in every way she could be saved. If that is true, then Cameron's vision of salvation is a deplorable.
Then, to top it off, Rose throws the diamond into the sea. The diamond that she held onto her whole life. It could have provided for her granddaughter after she died 5 minutes later from being 1000 years old. It also would have been a treasure for people all over the world to marvel over. But, no. She had to throw it into the sea to commemorate the way that she threw Jack into the sea in her other great selfish act in her life.
I agree 100%. I wish I could give you more than one upvote.

Its not that good compared to the all time greats.
As for all time box office, adjust for inflation.

It's a dumb, obnoxious movie that's the embodiment of Oscar-baiting fluff.
Billy Zane is the only one in the movie that gets it.

I think the vast majority of criticism for this film has to do with the backlash it received in the months after its release. It became too popular. This showed on IMDB for many years. It used to be rated below 6/10 on the website. Now it's closing in on 8/10 so people are finally waking up and realizing it as a great movie.
That and a lot of people who weren't around or were too young for Titanic when it was originally released are starting to watch and rate it on the website.

A good Titanic script would have been Rose drowning and passing the diamond to Jack who used it to have a life he never would have had thanks to her sacrifice.
As it stands, Titanic is about a rich girl who had the same life she would have had regardless, she just drowned a pauper during the interruption of her trans-Atlantic cruise.

I can see that Jack would've contributed more to mankind had he survived. Rose was probably more of a consumer than a producer.

The Leonard DiCaprio movie? That movie was awful.

I don't know you put any credence to a list that has Shawshank Redemption at #1, Dark Knight at #4 and all three LOTR movies in the top 20. Who the hell thinks that list is credible outside of Christopher Nolan fanboys and comic book neckbeards?

Winner. IMDB is a terrible "all time great" list.
