re: Frank Deford: Americans Don't Care About Major League Soccer

Disagree. Don't get me wrong, I get annoyed with some of the guys like on the soccer board here who have this sort of fake/overwrought investment in their adopted Euro club team. That said, we have always had youngsters playing the sport here. Now, add in the the extra TV/radio coverage, internet exposure/interest, FIFA video game, plus the billionaires' investment in those leagues as the teams have become toys. I think we are in a different era now.

Real hipsters hate sports. So you're talking about pretentious poseurs or something. The only people I know like me, that like European football, are diehard sports fans.

Really surprised it took until page 6 for SCH to inform everyone he's been around since the league started and that it sucks. I bet the under on 2.5.

Just because you keep repeating something, that doesn't make it true.
In fact, im not sure you know what a hipster is.

quote:I actually made 2 threads here about it. Here are the two OP's I made on the Soccer board because I was realizing something was weird about soccer fans, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Here was the first thread I ever made about the topic on 9/10/13:
Seems legit as frick
quote:
The passion of U.S. soccer fans seems fake...
It seems like they are trying too hard to act like soccer fans in Europe and South America, and it doesn't seem genuine.
Is that accurate or am I off base?
https://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/p/44510326/the-passion-of-us-soccer-fans-seems-fake/
Then, a month later on 10/11/13, it started to become more clear:
quote:
The U.S. fans at the game right now... why did most of them look like hipsters?
The camera panned to U.S. fans banging drums, and I couldn't help but notice that almost everybody in the shot looked like hipsters.
Is this common or was this an coincidental collection of hipsters caught on tape?
https://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/p/45309835/the-us-fans-at-the-game-right-now-why-did-most-of-them-look-like-hipsters/
That's when I realized there was a connection between hipsters and soccer. I noticed it on my own first before I ever knew there was a connection between hipsters and soccer.
And of course the posters on the soccer board were super defensive about both topics.

I don't really watch MLS. DC United is building a new stadium near Nationals Stadium, so I'll probably start going to a few when it's built.
But I watch EPL every weekend. My Saturdays in the fall are wonderful (for me, not my wife) because I watch soccer in the morning and then college football the rest of the day.
Disclaimer - I'm certainly not a hipster.
I would rarely say this. But mainly because the games I watch are in the mornings here (afternoon and evenings in Europe). I may utter these words during World Cup time if the game is played in the Western Hemisphere or if the US has a qualifier or Gold Cup match.
I'm not sure where you live, but maybe you're only exposure to soccer fans are a few pictures of hipsters watching the World Cup online. Soccer is pretty mainstream now among fans in the DC area. We get back in the office on Monday and discuss soccer games from the past weekend along with football, basketball or baseball, depending on the season. I work in a financial services firm with certainly no hipsters.

your prejudice doesn't bother me. but admit it for what it is.

And that's not meant to be a knock. But you're certainly not the demographic they're trying to reach.
I didn't take it as a knock but "old" is relative (to a point). and i'm sure are not trying to reach the senior crowd but they aren't reaching much of the other demographic either. at least the Americans. here in Houston, I imagine the latino's have been reached and it is a significant market here. but the vast majority of folks in the demographic of "people that can afford season tickets and PSLs" not many are going to pay for sports other than the big three I mentioned. following a pro team is expensive and most folks only follow one with their money because of that.

I'm not prejudice towards you. But you're not their demographic.

I simply disagree here. No one is claiming it's up there with baseball and football in popularity, but it's also not this barren wasteland, unsuccessful league that no one cares about.

at least the Americans. here in Houston,

This is actually a difficult concept for many native Texans to grasp. I know from first hand knowledge.

If it ain't EPL or champions league, I don't watch. I make special concessions for el clasico.
You're missing out on some good soccer then. La liga, Bundesliga, and arguably Serie A are all better than EPL right now. shite, Portugal and France still have teams alive in the Champions league.

Do you care about MLS?
If my city had a team I probably would care, but we don't. MLS is like minor league baseball, why would someone spend their time watching it when they can flip the channel and watch MLB (the premier league), but the games are fun to go to.
Posted on 4/10/15 at 4:04 pm to WeeWee
Premier league isn't the best league either though.
