Ive learned many things from shop and field personnel with 20+ years experience that I never could have learned with a degree

I've also heard some of the dumbest, most incorrect information come from the same group. But they have 20 years experience, so there's no telling them they are wrong. It isn't just young engineers that are hard to deal with.

2nd that shite big time. One moment your thanking them and the next you are busting out pen and paper to try and laymon terms something to them that is common sense and clear as day.

And I won't lie, I suck at grammar and spelling.

I will go first. Hello young engineers get your head out of the photon cloud or any thermodynamics thoughts you learned in college. You in the real world now how about focusing on people skills and networking. This means you can't solve everything so talk to hourly employees and other management and learn things. Network out and you may find something else you can move into later on and this means get to know other people in other industries that enter your plant or faculties. Trust me I have seen people that do these two things I just mentioned and prosper. If you don't you can be like these recent influx of new engineers that suck. Yes suck. No people skills and toughen up if times get a little though the grass isn't always greenier and those people skills may help you out. RANT OVER. Please chime in old folk engineers and new engineers.

All of what you said is exactly why I am doing engineering. I think Im pretty good to decent in terms of the math/science aspects, but I think I largely will set myself apart with my people skills and my ability to articulate the "complex" information to the "non-technical" folks. Any OT engineers need interns in the Houston area?

ETA: I do not suck at spelling, and I am mostly pretty good at grammar.

Uhhhh, how about any law written that prevents people from bombing said building to complete rubble?

Pretty sure that law was written with words.

I would chime in but I only have a degree in engineering. So I can't call myself an engineer.

I agree with this. I've been an engineer for less than a year and I've learned more from the shop guys (some of whom have been working on this equipment for 15-20 years+) than from anything else. Hands on experience is a hell of a supplement to theoretical knowledge.

This is true

I took one English class my freshman year at LSU.

Luckily, I'm a social butterfly so communication skills are not my problem. It's the doing work thing that always gets me.

As a Mech Eng I've worked in three different industries in my 10+ years since college and I've found one common thread among them all: treat the shop guys / construction personnel / fabricators with respect and they'll treat you with respect. You nor your designs will ever be completely correct, but you're a "team player" they're more willing to help make corrections and updates.
However, if you're a "typical new engineer", they'll go out of there way to get a front row seat to your F up... Seen it happen to dozens of new engineers and it never gets old

Was for 8 years

I have a degree in engineering management and earned it the hard way 6 years in EE(yes engineering classes)at real university. Yes I had a family so I went the management route.

I have managed young engineers in division. My take the 3 that have gone on to do great things were personable and listened to everyone. They lead improvement teams, etc. Over the last 2 years we have had about 8 new engineers they walk around like they know what's going on and don't ask questions or take suggestions. Long story short there is knowledge to be learned from people with experience. These new engineers get there arse kicked all day trying to fix shite, are here on weekends, and I just shake my head. I run a crew and laugh at these young engineers that just act like they know it all. Out of the 8 that started 2 have remained. Lol. They go elsewhere because they are so much smarter than the rest.

I am here to help young engineers out so just take it from someone that gets it....... Me
Been in management for 8 years

Just because you can draw it on a computer and print it on a piece of paper doesn't mean it can be built that way.

Simplicity never goes out of style.

Get your arse out into the field and see how shite works for real not in theory.

Walk around the plant and eat lunch with the operators everyday.

Note to older engineers. Don't assume we suck. I have done more in 6 months than my predecessors have done in years. Get off your high horse.
