A Confederacy of Dunces...Greatest Louisiana based Novel?

I'm fully aware that this book had been discussed here quite a bit, and if that bothers you, you desperately need to find a deeper meaning to your own personal life.
That said, I decided to reread the book after my second trip to New Orleans to see if I would appreciate it more now (the first time I read it, I had never been to LA at all). I have to say that after experiencing New Orleans twice, the book has gained a lot of meaning. Also learning more about Toole's life helped my appreciation in a strangely depressing, yet uplifting way.
All of that said to ask this: is there a better LA based novel in the opinion of the extensively knowledgable OT?

Haven't read it, but constantly looking for books on my kindle. Will bookmark this thread. Also, I'm going to go with Blood Bath- Susan D. Mustafa the story of Derrick Todd Lee. I wasn't old enough at the time to understand everything going on, so it was really interesting.

Great book. I first read it at LSU ('80s) for a class. Downloaded it last year and read it again. The Moviegoer by Walker Percy is a pretty good New Orleans book. Not as good as COD.

I really like the Game of Thrones serious. They never actually say that it's not in Louisiana so I vote for them.

Ignatius is how I picture 90% of the people on this board...

quote:centered in NOLA, I'd say that not only is it the best L.A. based novel, but it is one of the best novels of the late 20th century. That being said, I think a lot of non-NOLA people may miss some of the humor and nostalgia it contains. Still, the characterizations are amazing. Toole captures the essence of some types of New Orleanians perfectly. I could be related to a few, it's that close. Ah, Fortuna... for some reason some of the editing functions here are not cooperating. My valve may turn...
is there a better Louisiana based novel

ACoD is one of the greatest American novels, particularly in the category of humor. Any other Louisiana-based novel trump that?

I think it's hit or miss. I don't think it was that great and I lived in NOLA for 25 years. Others love it and it's on some Top 100 greatest novels ever lists.
One thing is that I generally am not enamored with humor novels....same jokes for 300 pages.

Read it in high school, and I think being forced to do so made me not appreciate as much. Read it again a few years ago and loved every page. If you are from new Orleans, Toole described someone in your family or someone you know at some point in the book.
I listened to the audio book even more recently, and that was awesome. The narrator was hilarious with the voices.

IMO, yes. It's one of the greatest works of the 20th century. No book ever made me laugh harder.
Ignatius trolls BR before anyone knew what trolling is.
I haven't seen it mentioned here, but Interview with a Vampire is solid. Figured there would be a ton of Anne Rice fans on this board.

No need for the Louisiana based qualifier. It is the greatest novel.

Have read Confederacy at least twice and will read it several more times, in my lifetime. Saw the play many years ago at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans. That was great!!! Don't know of any other book whose writer captured personalities as well as Confederacy. Having grown up in New Orleans, I "knew" all of the personalities presented by Toole.
Have you seen the bronze statue of Ignatius, under the clock, at D.H. Holmes original location on Canal St.?
