Just trying to get a general idea how much something like this may cost before I start the process.
Already own a lot in Metairie, looking to build a new house on it within the next year. Whats a good estimate to hire a general contractor for the following:
2 story, 1700 SF Living
300 SF Garage w/300 SF unfinished bonus room above
500 SF Covered back porch/patio with outdoor kitchen & bar area with a fireplace
TIA

165-175k
This is not for high end materials......185-190k for more upscale materials

There are a ton of options that can drastically affect the price. It depends on what kind of materials and luxuries that you would want.

80-135 sq ft, somewhere in there

Why 2 story?
About $310-350K.

Figured you'd just steal a house...

Around $230,000 should get what you describe, provided you don't go crazy on the finish work/kitchen area. It's been 8 years since I was a residential contractor though, and didn't work in BR. They may PIIYB.
Cost plus is the way to go if you know someone you can trust. Stay within your allowances and there will be no surprises. JMO

So each floor is only 850 SF?

I asked a question this morning on this same thing (basically) and got numbers all over the place. Up to people saying $190 a SF. I am more confused than before I asked.

If you choose typical finishes you're looking at $120-$145 per square foot

300 Sq foot garage??? That's a tiny arse garage. No way you're fitting two vehicles or a full size truck in there.

I built a house on my own lot about a year and a half ago. Pretty nice finishings (definitely not low grade).
It costs me about 118 a sq ft in the Shreveport area. And costs have definitely gone up since then.
I would think $120 would be a good guess based on normal 'nice' finishings. So... $210k ish...

I just came out the other end of this. I was you 2 years ago not knowing shite and getting help from these guys. I found the help as confusing as helpful since I was new to it.
1. What you need to do is find a floorplan for a house that's close to what you want and start interviewing with builders. Don't buy the plan; just show it to builders. I recommend you check Louisiana based floor plan companies since my wife picked a plan from some company up north. We bought it(waste of money) and it had to be redrawn anyway because it was drawn by some architect. In my opinion this is your best chance at ballparking price.
2. Make sure you interview several builders for price and personality. Our builder worked with us to turn my wife's $172 sq/ft idea in to $118 sq/ft and she's completely happy. All this before we signed anything or paid them a dime. Other builders just wanted her to give up on her idea for a house and pick a plan out of a book. Got to find a person that fits your situation.
3. Kitchen is the most expensive shite in the house. My wife wanted the outdoor kitchen too(even though she doesn't fricking cook). So we put all the water/gas/electric fittings for a future kitchen.

I would think $250-$275,000 if using a builder

Be the general contractor.
Hire your own subs.
Save that 20-30%.
Takes time, but well worth it.
