Walter will do whatever it takes to crush competition just like Frank. The difference is Walter is MUCH smarter and has dark connections to the true underbelly of society.
He'll just chill in the desert or winter cabin for MONTHS having "disappeared" on paper as he sends hit man after hit man to kill Frank and/or his family and friends.
Frank's weakness is he has too much pride to cower and hide. Walter will do just that if it means winning.

Not in Frank's mind. His greatest achievement was being gay in college. It was the only time he was happy.
Frank is a talker, a manipulator. Walter is a bomb maker, a spy equipment maker, a hirer of hit men, a hit man in his own right, a body disposer, a world ground breaking chemist, a drug dealer, a drug smuggler, a money launderer, a crime lord, a teacher, a dad, husband, cancer surviving train robbing, meth cook who can "disappear" for months at a time and also happens to be a schemer and manipulator.
