Went through the same thing with my GF

I beat the shite out of the dog and don't let it in the house. It listens now. GF threw a fit, but she got over it.

I still hate that dog and am waiting for a reason to kill it.

Post up on him and don't back down.

Take up his personal space and don't break eye contact. Dogs can sense when you're dominate.

Also, talk to your fricking girlfriend and tell her that it needs to be done. You can't let a dog control the situation.

i see this thread going 1 of 3 ways:

a: dog is gonna frick OP's world up

b: GF is gonna dump OP for whatever he tries to do with the dog

c: both a & b

I have owned multiple chows and I own a German Shepherd now. Chows take time to respect a new member of the pack, and from what you have described, he has been the alpha all along. Chows are hard headed the only way to show dominance is with force. This does not mean that you have to beat him, but in order to take the reigns, it might come to that. One rule of thumb with a chow is to never reach over the top of his head because they lack the vision to see your hand and you will startle him and more than likely get nailed. I agree with pinning him down until he submits but I would recommend putting a muzzle on him before that.
Now if he is exhibiting German Shepherd tendencies, you have to outsmart him. A German Shepherd will not follow a weak leader, and without leadership they will take the alpha role. Take the dogs on walks but you have to lead where you are going and never let them pull you which can be a problem because a GSD's nose will get them into trouble. With food aggression, make the dog earn the food before it is given. Also, while he is eating, stop and pick the food up and put it away. Then give the food back once he earns the right to eat. Once he gets the hang of that, once he is eating, put your hand in his food bowl and do not move it until he submits.

TLDR: dog growled at me and now he thinks he is alpha. He does not listen to me anymore. Tips to re-establish my alpha role?

Beat his arse. When your gf jumps up in protest, beat her. When he gets angry over that. Kill him.

Order restored.

Send him to the OT, they'll have him convinced he's a Beta in seconds.

So it really does go back to my bicycle chain idea. I was ahead of the curve. OP should still be worried about the other guy though. His bitches are definitely NOT in line at this point.

Its amazing people have to ask this question. Clearly the dog is smarter than ctiger69 and thus, most likely alpha anyway.

My parents have a chow right now. One day the chow wouldn't pay attention to my dad so my dad went to grab and the chow nailed him a couple of time. My dad proceeded to slam the dog down and choked that dog until it almost passed out. Since that day, dog has never been a problem.

Is that a for real story?

Do people really have to do stuff like this to their dogs?

Chows are really mean dogs Paige. It was a chow mix that ate that baby out here a few years ago. Parents (both Mesa PD) left baby in basinette and went in other room....came back and chow mix was eating baby's head.

Yep. True story. My parents have had the dog since he was a puppy and was around 4 years old when he did it so it wasn't like he did not know my dad. I don't advocate beating a dog but in a situation like that I think he did what was right.

Yeah, I know chows are mean. My ex uncle or whatever used to have them and he kept them on chain leashes running on long cables. We were not to go near them

I just wonder if people really do choke their dog out to teach it who's boss

He said the dog was nailing his dad. I think being raped by a dog gives you the right to choke it.
