Ask an airline pilot.

Seriously. They need it more than most any of us.

I have Filson luggage, it's good and when I'm checking in at nice hotel, I'm never embarrassed but I don't know that it's the "best".

If you try to push the size limit, be aware that American Airlines will make you check it (even if the bag is approved). frickers.

Briggs & Riley or Tumi Alpha II. Briggs comes with a lifetime warranty.

Best bang for the buck? Victorinox. Comes with a 10 year warranty.

And go with 4 wheels.

after talking to a few flight crew folks in airports, I bought a travelpro and have no regrets at all...it has been with me since the late '90s and has been through hell and I have not had one single problem with it...

fwiw, the two things to look out for are quality wheels and quality zippers....wheels need to have good ball bearings and be damn near indestructible....

also make sure it is made such that it can be drug over curbs thousands of times without picking it up off the ground without being damaged...

If you fly often and have an appreciation for the nicer things, I'd recommend TUMI.

Unless you are looking for some sort of status symbol, find a $50 suitcase you like, and buy one every 5 years. You'll go 60 years before you spend what you'll spend in the bags people will post in this thread.

I travel a lot and am usually all for spending extra for that wow factor, but I just could never justify it for a bag I put clothes in to get to where I need to go. Not knocking it.

Yup,

Tumi
Travelpro

I've used a TravelPro for the last 9 years and it has helped up remarkably well.

This comes from someone who ran a high end luggage store and repair shop.

1)Briggs & Riley (Lifetime Warranty covers everything)
2)Andiamo Luggage
3)Tumi
4)Swiss Army
5)Higher End Atlantic

You will hear a ton of people say Travelpro because that's what they see flight crews carry. Flight crews only carry Travelpro because Travelpro has a contract with all o the major airlines and most require that luggage as part of their uniform. Flight crews get HEFTY discounts on their products.. We repaired more Travelpro by far and it's not the most popular brand sold.

If you are going to carry on, really makes no difference. Don't buy cheap luggage to transport your more expensive clothes, shoes, etc...

Forgot the brand, but it's designed to go under the seat and it's huge. I;ll look for the link.

That stuff is mostly about status. I have a $50 carry on that I have had for 20 years and it still looks brand new.

FWIW I fly every single week. I went with a Samsonite for $150 and it has held up well. It's a four wheeler and has a few external compartments which is all I needed. I fly on regional jets so I have to check my bag at the gate - it probably gets abused by the bag crew.

In my opinion, the higher end brands are quality but you are really paying for their warranty, style, and the name recognition. I would go with a cheaper, reputable brand at first and if you feel the need to upgrade, look around for some deals online.
