A few years ago, a college friend of mine was visiting home. He came downstairs, watched his nieces and nephews open their Santa gifts, had breakfast.
He went upstairs to take a shower, slipped and broke his neck. Healthy in his young 30s and it was over, just like that.
I've had a hard time with Christmas since.
Some of you might have known him. He worked in the athletic department at Auburn. This was his funeral. The most surreal thing I have ever done is roll that tree.

Christmas depresses me... the snow, coldness, all the music and idk. Maybe its because I have no family here in the country.
But i agree with Darth vader, seeing your kids experience life is a highlight. I dont have any kids , but the only reason Im still on Earth if for my little brother and parents. Family and close friends make life better. Wish i had a big close family.

i'll never forget the ~30 minute car ride while my mom was on the phone with one of our our closest family friends whose husband had just blown his brains out. hysterical tears from my mom and sister. this was the 22nd iirc. great times.

Christmas started to pall for me when my grandparents started to be too old to host the gettogether.
My grandmother, the matriarch of my family, died at home some years later under hospice care after a protracted death watch. I never got to say goodbye. When she died I was there. And remained there till the cornoner came as if it could postpone the finality of goodbye. After then I calmly went to my room, to my guest room, and let my mask go down. Only one of three times in my memory I have cried.
The funeral was on Christmas Eve, and for all intents and purposes Christmas died for me there. I don't feel twinges of sadness.....more feelings of exclusion when I see others revel in the family connection that is now gone for me.

I actually like the song, except for the part where the dude is buying a cheap sixer and the snow turned...in...to...raaaa....aain. I thought for sure they were gonna bang it out for old times sake in the car.

No game.
He coulda knocked it down, just on star power alone.
Good tune, though.
RIP, Dan.

I've had some pretty shitty Christmases in the past as well. The Christmas after my maternal grandmother died (she was raising me and my brother) all I got for Christmas that year was a pack of tube socks. We'd been sent to live with relatives from our Father's side, which they were all strangers to us. They did Christmas for all the grand kids over at the grandparents house. I sat there with my pack of tube socks watching all the other grand kids open all sorts of presents. That kinda sucked for a 14 yr old kid.
It got worse though, a couple years later when I was 16 I spent Christmas eve and Christmas day in a trailer in Nectar Alabama alone with no power, no water, no food. It was in the 20's & 30's and all I had for heat or light was a small portable kerosene heater.
yeah that does suck. Mine wasn't near that bad, but it still leaves an unpleasant taste in my mouth.
One time the presents I got were re-wrapped toys I already owned. The weird part was I was 26. I dunno what my father was thinking.

I try to do the same, buts it's hard when, every now and then, you noticed you're the only one not blood related in the family. FYI: grand parents, parents, and sister passed away, kids stay with their mother. However, we have our health, I have my in-law family, and I have Jesus...so, I'm good!

I guess that love
Is like a Christmas card
You decorate a tree
You throw it in the yard
It decays and dies
And the snowmen melt
Well I once knew love
I knew how love felt
