Don't misunderstand me. I love Christmas. The highlight is watching my kids and seeing how they enjoy it. That and getting together with friends and family. Still, the older you get the more people you lose either through death or moving apart. As the years pile on that twinge of sadness he mentioned in the OP does grow, it's only natural that it will. But you take that sadness and you treasure it and hold on to it. It reminds you of the life you've lived, like looking at old scars. Son't let it ruin your holiday, but still honor those you've lost and feel that ever growing twinge of sadness every year.

Feeling depressed this year. Lost my father three months ago. I am not married. No kids. No girlfriend. I think often about not being around anymore. Despair and depression.

I have a good job and I take Paxil. Feel like crying.

For me, yes. Always think of my Mom and Dad even more at Christmas time. I also think about the Good Lord and what he has done for us.

I've been there. You just have to find someone / something positive to latch onto. Things do get better. Eventually.

yes. I have had some really bad christmas experiences growing up. My father left my mother the day after my birthday and the weekend before christmas. Plus a lot of bad experiences with my father.

Those memories seem to trump the mostly positive experiences I have had in the last 15 years. it was pretty traumatic on the family, I guess, and I can't forget that.

If you're not kidding, I'll say that nothing anyone says will make you feel better.
But the pain we all face as humans about mortality is universal. Take comfort in knowing we all experience/d what you're feeling, and that you're not alone.

Merry Christmas.

I've had some pretty shitty Christmases in the past as well. The Christmas after my maternal grandmother died (she was raising me and my brother) all I got for Christmas that year was a pack of tube socks. We'd been sent to live with relatives from our Father's side, which they were all strangers to us. They did Christmas for all the grand kids over at the grandparents house. I sat there with my pack of tube socks watching all the other grand kids open all sorts of presents. That kinda sucked for a 14 yr old kid.

It got worse though, a couple years later when I was 16 I spent Christmas eve and Christmas day in a trailer in Nectar Alabama alone with no power, no water, no food. It was in the 20's & 30's and all I had for heat or light was a small portable kerosene heater.

Those Christmases sucked for sure but what they did was teach me to be glad for whatever it is I have because it can always be worse.

You're deeper than I thought.

Sometimes talking to someone else helps though.
Gain some perspective...

If he's angry, or going through anger, he doesn't wanna read or hear anybody's shite.
That's normal.

ETA: but eventually, yeah. Gettin some new perspective from people who have experience is gonna make him feel better.

Being sad is human. You're having a human emotion.
There are emotions that are worse.

Try living through depression daily for the past 11 years

I wish I only experienced sadness one day of year

You've made some poor decisions in your life Walter.
It's gonna get worse before it gets better.
