I would suggest writing about the things you know, not the things you've heard second hand.
So because I didn't go to UVA, I am disqualified from opining on a well-publicized scandal concerning it. Got it.
I'll be sure to disregard any further observations from my friends who did go there, since they can't be trusted.

In this case, yes. You're poorly positioned to make judgements on the authors allegations, and her charizations of the community. She goes out of her way to present a distorted image of life at UVa. She does so by contorting and selectively ignoring information. It's difficult to see that without actually knowing UVa.

What struck me as most odd was the statistic that 1 in 5 women is sexually assaulted in college (12% report it). How in the world is that true?

What about the people who do "know" UVA (ie went there) and have said these things to me? Did something get lost in translation? Is my plebeian, non-UVA brain incapable of correctly retaining the information they graciously conveyed to me?

There's a great deal of conflict about those numbers. Some say 6% others say 20%. It really comes down to what you include (does a drunken kiss at a bar count?) and if you label drunken sex assault (which a number of these surveys do).
The BJS calculates that 3% of college women are raped every year.

It's not, but as a society we're rapidly working to change the definition to match up with the fake statistic we've been using for years.

That part almost seems made up. How could someone be that sick?
Very believable. Anyone scummy enough to commit a rape is scummy enough to act like it's no big deal if he sees the vic later.

Groping meets the legal definition of sexual assault.
And I don't have a problem with that definition. If a gay guy came up to you and grabbed your crotch, you wouldn't be very happy about it. And you'd most likely feel justified in punching him out (even if you don't actually do it).

Rolling Stone magazine apologized to readers for a story it published chronicling one woman's account of a gang rape at a University of Virginia fraternity house and the school's failure to respond to that alleged assault.
"In the face of new information, there now appear to be discrepancies in [the woman's] account, and we have come to the conclusion that our trust in her was misplaced," Rolling Stone said.
The fraternity chapter's lawyer, Ben Warthen, told CNN the magazine's story is "just not true."
UVA had suspended all fraternities until after the winter break in the wake of the report.
