I've always heard UVA was one of the toughest schools academically to get through. I guess the whole book smart vs common sense thing is true. Story does have holes, but damn.

I was in a frat and couldn't even imagine this happening. Sure one guy doing something crazy, but convincing a group of guys to do this and word not leaking out at all to someone not involved? Not even a hungover, guess what we did story?

Not that I'm saying the girl is at fault, but you have a group of guys, prob more than the guys involved that at least heard the story, and the girls friends that said absolutely nothing. That is just disgusting and I hope I don't know that many people that would participate and blatantly ignore this.

The article makes it seem like everyone knows someone who got raped there and which fraternities to avoid being raped at.

I'm assuming one of the three colleges you attended was Tulane. Not sure when you were there, but in the mid-1990s everyone knew not to leave a female friend alone in the Pike house.

Not saying nothing happened to the poor girl. Obviously something went down.

But it seemed like a sensationalized frat bashing article to me.

Also agree that going to the police and hospital after rape should be strongly encouraged.
of course it should but I can link other rape threads from td to show you one reason why someone might hesitate to do so. "She probably just changed her mind." "she regretted it in the morning." "can't be rape, she's a slut." "this poor guy's life is over."

What the friends said in the article isn't far fetched.

We've all seen it here. The accuser immediately gets blamed. Then, on top of that, we've seen how many sexual assault cases get ignored by the police. It all gives you a much greater understanding of why someone may not come forward after a rape.

The accuser does sometimes gets blamed and thats wrong but women have no one to blame but themselves for that. The stakes are much higher for the accused and the accuser has nothing to lose even if she's making it up. That's not right either.

What's stunning is that she called three friends to pick her up after she got raped, and supposedly all three advised her to not go to the hospital so they would not be ostracized socially. Crazy.

I know people like this. Everyone does. Crazy yes.

Yes. Well that and the fact that we live in the United States. You don't just get to accuse someone of rape and have them thrown in prison on the spot. Sorry. When someone accused of a crime that is basically he said/she said, all possibilities will be considered. That doesn't mean no one is believing the chick. Its just what's fair to all parties involved.

Well I knew to never leave a female alone anywhere, but your point is taken. But I never knew anyone who was raped and that is a small school where you know everyone. It was more of a running joke was my understanding when I attended. Just based in their culture and type of guys they rushed.

Yeah what I said on face value isn't earth shattering. I fully understand why some don't report anything. It was just reinforcement that if anything go get some data from a rape clinic. I don't know the due process but I would think you could get an unbiased report based your injuries and possible bio evidence. From there you could decide to press charges or not.

I never hinted that someone doesn't deserve due process. What I have a problem with is assuming she's lying all the time? Why not assume the guy did it? Men have raped before. Men have raped more often than women who have lied about it.

I was in a frat, too. The sister of a guy in our chapter had a narrow escape from having this happen to her from some guys in another frat. A little too much to drink at a bar, accepting a ride from someone she trusted. She ended up bolting out the door before (I think) anything happened. AFAIK I know there were no legal consequences, although her brother did beat the dogshit out of one of them a short while later.

True, but it's much easier to enforce public accountability with a police department, an organization under whose very purview this should fall, than it is with a university administration. If something is wrong with a system or process, I'd much rather the target be a police and judicial system rather than a university system operating fuzzily outside the purview of the law.

Many people do assume the guy did it. Many assume the girl is lying. Sorry there just isn't the bias you want to believe there is.

DAMNNNNNN....UVA has suspended the whole fraternity system because of this article.

quote:

Following Rolling Stone publishing Sabrina Rubin Erdely's harrowing report "A Rape on Campus," which detailed a pattern of sexual assault among the fraternities at the University of Virginia, many women who attended UVA emailed Rolling Stone sharing their own similar stories. After "A Rape on Campus" went viral, the school itself acknowledged the Rolling Stone article by promising to make changes to their student sexual misconduct policy. Now, the University is taking even more stern action.

quote:

President Teresa A. Sullivan announced in a letter to students and alumni that the school's fraternities have been suspended effective immediately. The suspension will last until January 9, 2015, which marks the beginning of the spring semester. In that time, "we will assemble groups of students, faculty, alumni, and other concerned parties to discuss our next steps in preventing sexual assault and sexual violence on Grounds," Sullivan writes. "The wrongs described in Rolling Stone are appalling and have caused all of us to reexamine our responsibility to this community. Rape is an abhorrent crime that has no place in the world, let alone on the campuses and grounds of our nation’s colleges and universities," Sullivan continues. "As you are aware, I have asked the Charlottesville Police Department to investigate the 2012 assault that is described in Rolling Stone. There are individuals in our community who know what happened that night, and I am calling on them to come forward to the police to report the facts. Only you can shed light on the truth, and it is your responsibility to do so."
