do you believe in the blanket statement "family comes first"?

Do you think that no matter what you should always put your family first? Or do you think there is a time and place to be selfish?
To clarify, I am not referring to your family as in your children and wife, but as in your sister, brother and parents

Yes.

Sure. But not at the expense of family.
ETA: Family of procreation comes before family of origin.

if by family you mean I should put my distant cousin's wife above my best friend, no

sometimes making one's personal happiness first makes for a happier you thus happier family. There is no generic answer for this. Life is a balancing act, then you get fricked and die.

I see family as your "nuclear family" and meaning you parents, kids and spouse.
So yes, they should be put ahead of you.
That cousin in Iowa you see once every six years? Yeah I may put myself first.

Children, yes
Everyone else? Be selfish
Everyone else? Be selfish

Work comes first. With out that, you can't support a family.

No, if I did I'd probably still live very close to my parents. You only have one life to live, live it for yourself.

No, it depends. I think there is a presumption that you do, but that can change based on the circumstances.

It's a good default setting. But every now and then there are circumstances deserving of an over-ride.

Not once you're married. Once you're married,

All blanket statements are dumb.

It should be siblings, parents, children, dog, spouse, and best friends . Idk about frat brothers. I think in military or firefighter worlds, their coworkers are family.

My wife and kids come before everyone else every time always

family does not always come first in my book. I have best friends who are there for me a whole lot more than some of my family.

Nope.
Once you choose a partner, they should be your #1, and if you let your family members get in the way of that, you are letting them control you.
Also, plenty of people have really awful family members. If your parent, cousin, sibling, whatever is negatively affecting your life, you need to rethink their rank.
