Obvious answer would be yes since that is whats happening, I just feel like there is a rule somewhere that prevents this. Any one else having to do anything like this over the break? 2 hour drive tomorrow (be on campus for 7:30) and a 3 hour drive Friday (be on campus for 6:30.) Never been more bummed to be on 'vacation' in my life.

Can't find any info anywhere about fall break other than the dates. I know teachers have to work and students are out of class but I guess he's hitting a loophole with it being a lab trip.

but really

It is my understanding that no scheduled class activities can be mandated during the fall break. To inquire further, you could contact the Dean of your college or, if that doesn't work, the Provost's office.

Screw that nonsense.

Call the department today. Ask for the chair, if he/she is not available ask for the main department assistant.

A professor can not schedule activities when the university is closed. Assignments may be due after holidays, of course. No school attendance may be assigned during holidays.

Asshats like this need to be called out. They look bad for the department. If you don't get a satisfactory answer there, call the college. Slam him on his teacher evals.

Yeah, if you can go ahead and come in for lab during break that would be great.

Professors break the rules all the time.

The one loophole where he might frick you is if it was on the syllabus from day one.

If the school is closed there can't be any classes. I feel pretty confident about this. It's like having class during Christmas break. Your professor (like a lot of them) is a total dick/count depending on gender.

Is the professor foreign? I would put money on them being foreign.
