Are we that cynical these days where someone can't even help out a neighbor?

Baby Boomers and their "leave me alone in my suburban enclave" ruined America.

Yes, and in life, there are consequences for actions taken. One of them is, if you live in a place with an HOA and you paint your house lime green, you have to deal with the consequences.

Again, it sounds like you live in a nice neighborhood. If you don't want to deal with an HOA, then don't live in a place that has one. End of discussion.

Exactly. And to think someone went so far as to call me a communist bc I chose (along with my neighbors) to live in a nice place that is regulated to ensure that it stays nice. Again, if anyone wants to live in a pace without an HOA and this insurance they are free to do so. Nobody ever forced anyone to move where there is an HOA. It's a choice. Hardly communism.

I know from a personal experience, I was greeted to my new home by the president of the HOA and he told me that they had a rule of not parking on the street.....

Well, they are 3 bedroom places with 2 car garages. Sorry, but people are gonna park on the street.

Anyway, the first weekend I moved in was my birthday and I had my family and close friends come over for a party. Well, someone called the cops cause they parked on the street... There was no noise complaint or anything. I went and talked to the cop and he said that the city has a policy of 2 hr and under parking on the street in neighborhoods is legal so he couldn't do anything as long as they weren't blocking in anyone's driveway.

HOA can kiss my arse cause people park on the street all the time.

our neighborhood HOA just asks that there be no overnight street parking, which I don't have a huge problem with

we occasionally break that rule when parents stay at our house, but its not too often

there are other houses though, that seem to use the street for parking every night, when their driveway could easily accommodate another car....they do it out of convenience so no one has to let anyone out in the morning

i understand that it may sound a little hypocritical, but I do wish the HOA would send a notice to those repeat offenders

Quite frankly, who gives a frick what you think? Read the HOA rules and regulations before you purchase property and don't try to change things after you have already agreed to them. If you didn't like the rules, the time to speak up was before you purchased or leased. Ignorant and entitled worldview. The fact of the matter is that you neglected to complete due diligence in your purchase or lease and are now crying foul.

As long as you know that going in, fine.

But this is one of those "rules" that seems strange to me. How is someone parking a car on the curb going to somehow ruin the charm of the neighborhood. If they were parking on the grass, that's one thing. But just parking on the street?

The one exception of course is if the street is so narrow that it's simply not safe to park on the curb.

You answered one point.

It does look trashy to have cars in the street...usually it's a rule that isn't enforced too much. Sometimes you get wackos on the board that like to borderline harass people with the rules. Believe me I know....I'm on a HOA board and we have a psychotic 74 year old woman who constantly fires off emails with complaints about us not enforcing the rules strongly enough.

I guess I'm still trying to figure out how someone painting their home lime green effects the values of all the other homes in the neighborhood. Sure, if the house in otherwise poor shape, but how does the color make a difference?

HOAs are a double-edged sword.
Do they take away personal freedom to do (or not do) things with one's property? Sure.
But move to Mississippi or Alabama into an area without a HOA with strict enforcement and see if you can rely on your neighbors good graces to keep up with their shite.

I'll save you the trouble, in 999 places out of 1,000, the answer will be "No!". Welcome to the never-ending boat trailer rebuilding neighborhood. Or Trans-Cameros on blocks statuary garden.

On the whole, I'm happier giving up some personal freedom to a strict HOA and that mechanism protecting the value and quality of my neighborhood. That's just me. I don't have to Rage Against the Machine on every fine point of alleged personal freedom erosion.
So what I can't have junk cars piled up in my front yard?

The paint job wouldn't bother me. The family with NINE cars every night at a 1500 sq foot house DID bother me. Not because they parked in the street, but because they parked up both sides and front of a corner lot, meaning it was a big ol mud hole most of the year. Of course, these weren't the sort of ppl who graciously hosted the annual block party: pit bull chained to a tree in front, screaming fights outside, etc. it wasn't just the nine cars, it was the complete package of dysfunction expressing itself in the inability to do even the most basic home maintenance.

I will gladly pay my $60/mo and put up with the 28 pages of covenants. The rules serve to weed out the antisocial, uncooperative, and thoughtless. No section 8, no homemade carport additions, no tin sheds. If you want unregulated, there are plenty of places for you. But dont move into an HOA and bitch about rules.

Also, be sure you understand how long the developers control extends....have seen a pack of neighbors think they could simply show up and vote a rule change, but they didn't bother to read the details of our HOA gOvernance. Developer controls everything until 10 years after the last lot is sold. Also be sure to understand the difference between HOA regs and covenants attached to the property.
