Around 225k. Look Im not bashing the city, I FREAKING LOVE IT. And we will be back. I just think the real estate market is very crappy compared to most other places in the south.

There is nothing wrong with it and it will be a great house for someone. But it needs updates. Like I said we obviously could have made it work here but sometimes you get fed up with making it work

I'd personally would rather update a house than move 10 hours away from family and friends. But it takes all types. As long as you're happy that's all that matters.

You are right I didnt. That is another thing that was tough for me. Where I grew up they had actual neighborhoods and zoning. I didnt like the fact you could get to all the houses from major streets and be right across the street from a restaurant or apt

Well hopefully we get richer

ETA: I also think some type of economic event will happen and Lakeview will have many many foreclosures. Seems like alot of people potentially getting in over their heads........

I'm trying to figure out if he seriously thought he was going to find a property in a good neighborhood in Orleans parish for 225 K

I was looking in Jefferson. And what I found for that price I thought was pretty bad compared to almost all other places. That was my only point

You should probably try reading instead of trying to take shots at people. He was also looking in Metairie.

We saw what our friends who lived in the Nashville area got and realized we were being hardheaded and dumb by not making or money go 10x as far. If Nola figured it out like they have here though I would move back in a heartbeat
Don't feel bad. My wife and I were both born and raised in NOLA. It was like that far back as I remember. Always pricey housing for young couples. Even pre-Katrina. Old dilapidated fixer-upper houses in Gentilly off Franklin were ridiculous. Plus it was virtually impossible to get financing in the city back in the 1970s unless you were independently wealthy. God knows we tried. Thank God we didn't succeed. This was the time of the first great migration to Slidell, when great new starter home subdivisions were going up and financing was available. Also to Chalmette/St. Bernard (where we opted to go for family and job reasons). We wanted to live in NOLA, but its ridiculous prices and walls of defense built up against ready financing shut its doors on us.

Since then we've left Chalmette (1984), moved outside of LA, and have owned 2500-3000 sq ft. homes in KY, GA, and FL. These would still be untouchable $$$-wise in NOLA, but we could get good pricing and ready financing without hassle and red tape (and the usual NOLA BS).

Our daughter and son in law are about to move to a Dallas suburb - you should see the nice 3000+ square foot newer homes they can get for a very reasonable price! And in nice middle/upscale neighborhoods.

In my experience, NOLA has never made it easy for young couples to get a start. Except for the wealthy ones, that is. Let the middle class beware.

Oh I completely agree I just always wonder why it seems like Nola dropped the ball on the positive parts the suburbs seem to offer in most other places

I don't know if Metairie changed or if I changed, but the last time I was there I was stunned at how trashy it was. Litter, unpleasant medians and landscaping, poor planning on retail entrances, etc. Lots of bros with Affliction type shirts and girls with ugly tats, too.

The vast majority of OM wealth is "new money." Like almost all of it.

Yeah you dumb.

Just because there are young families, like 40- 50 year old parents, doesn't make them new money.

Now granted, most come from money to begin with but now they are mostly super successful doctors and lawyers that can hold their own.
