couple of things have helped me in the past:
-cut back on caffeine in the afternoon. i used to be an all-day coffee drinker, and if i didn't have first hand experience with it i'd read this statement and call bullshite. but it really worked for me.
-get enough exercise.
-cut back on the booze during the week at least.
-also i used to switch from the bed to the couch (and back if necessary) if i lied awake for more than about 30 minutes. for some reason that helped break up the mental train of thought that i'd build up just thinking about shite when i can't sleep.

Good tip, thanks.

This guy!
I've become better about it, but my anxiety thoughts will race right before bed. One way I deal with it is to work myself out to exhaustion.

Just about everyone does and it's been a lifelong battle for me.
Average OTers fall a sleep in less than 2 minutes though.

Rule #1: Get the TV out of the bedroom.
The bedroom is for sleeping and indoor sports.
(Note to poors here: the dressing room or a large closet is for getting dressed. If these are not available, the bedroom may suffice for that purpose too.)
Force a routine schedule of going to bed at a certain same time each night on yourself. Make it 10:00 or 11:00 pm. We are not nocturnal creatures as a rule, let Mother Nature take over.

Just starting graduate school at LSU and my sleep patterns from undergrad and highschool are catching up with me.
I was in the same boat 2 years ago and this will help:
like others have said no caffeine after 5pm
exercise atleast 5 days a week
schedule 7 hours of sleep in a night, it can be done you just have to schedule.
read something light for 30 mins before bed.

I use to. Then I forced myself to go to sleep earlier. Just wait till you start getting to sleep early and then dragging arse in the morning, I think that's worse.
I find that exercise and food affect my sleeping habits as well.

do you take any form of medication? caffeine intake? what kind of diet?
regardless, adding in exercise to your routine will immensely help with sleep

My wife struggles with it. I will wake up with her on the coach several times a week. She will not be able to fall asleep in bed so she will go lay down on the coach and watch TV till she falls asleep.
It annoys the hell out of her that I never have any problems sleeping. I go to bed at 10 pm and sleep till 6 am. Rarely wake up during the night and fall asleep quickly.

<-- me.
Exercise is really the key. Im so worn out after work and running the kids to all their stuff etc that I usually finally sit down and that's it, not going to exercise. On the days that I do make time for it I sleep much much better. (even a walk around the subdivision with the dog)

genetics play a big factor as well. you're one of lucky ones.
my dad always struggles with sleep and he tried literally everything. although my insomnia isn't as bad but I inherited his gene.

PS - if you're jacked on vyvanse or Adderall to study that's probably keeping you up all night.

quote:If you can help it, don't take drugs to study. Cramming doesn't work at that level. Study everyday esp if you are doing research, there is plenty of time while the experiments are going on (depending on the subject).
