Clean your birds in the field when it gets slow.

And I second a mojo. I'm a believer.

Bucket or stool to sit on
I use a shooting belt to hold my shots and birds ($15 at academy)
Wear camo pants and long sleeve camo shirt
Birds fly slower along the tree lines and near water holes so those are the easier shots.

If you don't bird hunt much bring a case of shells. I prefer 6 shot but 7 1/2 is fine also. High brass if you can find it.

I shoot a pump and its just fine.

Identify where other hunters are and don't shoot flat with the ground but expect to get peppered. I try and put a tree or something between me and another hunter that close by unless I know them very well.

Enjoy...its a blast...I'll be in West Texas for the same in about 2 wks.

I usually use size 8 shot.

And if they are flying enough that I have to worry about my gun barrel getting too hot, then the hunt is usually over pretty quickly. Usually don't need more that a box and a half.

If not hunting with a dog , mark your birds and go straight to them when downed .

Shooting Dove requires some anticipation, those little suckers are like hummingbirds. It'll look like they're going one way, then they're not.

I hate' em.

That's a great tip right there, robins. I've lost a few birds trying to be greedy and shoot another if a lot are flying.

Especially if the corn or milo has not been disked and your buddies are screaming that doves are headed your way ...

Man , their is good advise and then stupid advice here. Use common sense. Wear sunscreen and get hydrated then drink beer. Man there ain't a red bug in west Texas so forget that. No orange!! Geese. Those fishing shirts are the hottest shirts ever invented if you haven't noticed. Have fun and the ole 870 is just fine. Low brass shells. #7 1/2 and plenty off them.

The 870 is all you need. That gun has killed lots of doves. I'd rather my sbe2 though. 7 1/2 is my go to shot size for doves. I shoot low brass, that crap you buy in 100rd boxes at Walmart. I always use 2 mojos and 6 regular decoys. I'll put 3-4 mojos if I'm hunting with someone who has them. Mojos work for doves. I bring a spin top bucket to carry my decoys and sit on, and a backpack ice chest with plenty of drinks. I wear rubber boots, usually camo wranglers, camo tshirt, camo hat. I don't paint my face considering half my arms are showing anyway. Marking birds and shooting 1 bird at a time is solid advice. It doesn't do any good to shoot a double if you only find 1 of them. Good luck!

This! Game bag is a handy item. When you walk out to get your bird and put it in your bag you can fire shots at other birds on your way out and back to your spot. Bucket is not a bad idea. One with a top. You can sit on it and then take the birds out of your game bag and put them in the bucket. Ants will get your birds if you put them on the ground.

This is a good idea. Better to bring to much ammo. I hunted dove in west Texas last weekend. I shot as fast as I could load. I was through two boxes in minutes. I shot over 100 rounds that AM alone. I'm not a good shot. I had to make an ammo run that afternoon. 4 other guys asked me to pick up more ammo for them too.

West Texas is hot as freak. Will be over 100. Hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate. Watch out for cactus.

Apparently you don't know about the "freebie" doves..

No limit on Eurasian collared doves. They taste great and there are plenty of them!!!!

Update: Packing my bags, so far I've got:

870
1100 (borrowed)
Case of 7 1/2 shells
Dove stool
Dove belt
Eye and ear pro
Fishing shirts (tan)
Camo shirt
5.11 pants (tan)
Cowboy Boots
Bullfrog sunscreen
Thermacell
1911 w/OWB holster (loaded with alternating rat shot and 45)
Alcohol and tobacco

Now I just need to find a good hat. Anything I’m missing?
