it's not ethical business practice to charge 10x the fare as we have proof this has already happened.
if it's not ethical (which means too expensive), then people won't pay and the model will die
why not let the market sort it out?

dude charging 1,500 for a fricking hotel room is not supply and demand.
no it's the textbook definition of supply and demand
quote:
. it's unfrickingethical
why? if people will pay, then those rooms are worth that much
if 2 parties voluntarily agree, then how can that be unethical?

So Über was $1200?
Just STFU

Exactly. A business is designed to maximize margins on whatever service they provide. If the demand is there for the taking there should be no issue with the price for said service.

Zealot sounds like a got damn pinko commie.

and no one has yet to answer this question: would you be okay with restaurants charging double the entree price during peak hours?
yes

it's supply and demand so why don't they do it????
because i doubt the very top could charge double every night and maintain the demand. this would combo with pissing off a portion of the fanbase and lead to a cycle of death.
do you think it's unethical for restaurants to offer lunch specials? ladies night? happy hour? same thing

first off, the super bowl hotels are being paid by 95% corporate folks and not your fans…hence the reason for the unethical spike.
secondly, Uber is SO far ahead of the competition, they can piss off half their fan base and still have a billion dollar market. and the 10x spike was is unethical…you don't even know if it filled the demand….you have no data to back that claim…for all we know the 10x fare actually resulted in a net loss for the company instead of simply having a smaller spike.
hard to argue my point of 4-10x surge rate being ridiculous without the data to back it up…i know they lost 1 customer in me…in fact, you could probably poll Tigerdroppings on who accepted the huge increase and who didn't.

Well if that's the case they won't do it again
I was at the game too and needed a cab out of there. I saw uber was x7.5 so I walked a mile or so and found a cab. Free market

So rich people's money is no good to you?

As opposed to a $2b market? Sounds like a smart decision on their part.

You need to open an economics book. They don't have a monopoly on transportation (cabs, buses, people driving themselves, long walks). It doesn't make sense for them to raise prices to make more money. Know why? Because if they made more money charging ~$100 per ride, they would do it ALL OF THE TIME.

Wait, are we dissing uber for surge rates when demand is high?
For one, without it the wait would get to be so stupid long it'd be like calling a BR yellow cab.
Second, how is it any different than cabbies charging a flat rate/switching to cash only when a big event is going on in NOLA?

Yea we just found a cab home after taking train to midtown. Even that still ended up being 3x the price we paid to uber to midtown a couple times before.

The one point no one has brought up yet is the total cost of ownership UberX vs Taxi. Let's say 8 times you UberX it's cheaper than a cab, then twice it's 8x the fare. However, when you compare the cost of all taxis vs the cost of all Uber's, it's constant with Uber winning the battle of convenience. This argument to me lends itself a better viewpoint than simply being complacent with any surge price regardless.

Only one of us is. Mostly because he doesn't understand:

Uber is a market. It's fine for normal use but it's not a serious alternative to the cab company yet.
in BR it most certainly is an alternative. at this point its not only that, its really the only way to go.
